Old video driver perhaps?

I hope this is not an ATI issue (like the missing sun glare).
Anyone with an ATI card: could you post some comparison pictures?
I'll do it when I'll be back from work (still have some screenshots from the patch 1.1-will post comparison pictures with patch 1.2)

Here we go:

No FSAA, 1280x1024:

8xS FSAA, 1280x1024:

DISTINCT difference, don't you say? Now, this is on an NVidia 6800 GT with FORCED FSAA. There's no menu setting.

ATR-42 04-17-07 11:56 AM

what are you guys getting for frame rates with FSAA? i seem to be getting between 25 and 30, closer to 24-25 when in the ports... seems kinda low, but i dont have anything to compair it to.....

Lt. Staumeier 04-17-07 11:57 AM

My system is old and crumbling. I get 15-17 FPS without and about 2-7 FPS with >.<

Boris 04-17-07 11:58 AM

Ok, I didn't change my drivers, but I played around with the resolutions a bit and I found out a few things.

temporal, or no temporal AA, or 2x 4x or 6x, won't work for me on my native resolution of 1680x1050

It does however work on every resolution below that... go figure :-?

I guess now I have to decide if I wan't to play at my native res without, or at lower res's with AA.

Has anyone been able to apply AA to 1680x1050?

Commander_Data 04-17-07 12:30 PM

Can confirm that 8xAA works on 1280x1024. Have some damn nice fps aswell. ~85fps.

But the studdering is back it seams? :damn:

Honestly, when buying an LCD, that's why I went with a 1280x1024 display instead of 1680x1050.

There are just so many problems with widescreen displays and gaming still, it's just not worth the headache.

(Plus, to play "the latest games" at native res takes much more expensive and frequent upgrades to handle 1680x1050 vs 1280x1024 ;) )

I think a good advice is to get a LCD that has a "standard" resolution on the Y-axis (1024, 1200, etc.). That way, if the widescreen resolution is not supporter, you can always "fall back" to one of the standard resolutions (1280x1024, 1600x1200) and only "suffer" the black bars to the left and right.
This problem with WS monitors will disappear with time, but it's still happening from time to time (especially, and unfixable, for older games).

My 17'' LCD monitor kicks my old CRT 17'' butt anytime when compared the quality. Much sharper on LCD IMO.

Kromus 04-17-07 01:12 PM

AA is working, just need to force it via control panel.

Well, depending on how you define "image quality" :D

I would not be able to go back to CRT (and my last one was a very good 19 inch). The" blurryness" of the CRT would kill me. On the other hand, this blurryness acts as a natural FSAA and some things therefore really look better, more natural on CRTs. But on an average use basis (which includes using a lot of text), nothing beats a good LCD IMHO.

Boris, I bet in a config file somewhere they topped it at 1600. Find it and add your resolution to the file and see if it works.
