Voted for War Ace Campaign.
I see alot of posts for GWX, no suprise. Take a look at GWX's distribution. There are multiple sites, and most of them are straight forward good speed without pop-ups, or looser porn getting in the way. That's the way to do it. Seriously I can only speak for myself but I do hate having to filter through all that crap just to download a mod. Excluding the content/gameplay I belive if NYGM & WAC had equal distribution as alternatives this poll and probably the forum content would be different. But that is no fault of GWX just good distribution and top support. I mean you rarely get that kind of thing with products you pay for. The side affect I see is the dominance this creates. While the users busy enjoying mods may not see this, I belive for anyone looking into modding the game it is to their ill interest not to be aware of other electives. Or at the very least to try them. What is to their loss, download time? It also occurs to me a certain supression other modders may feel. I could be mistaken but I don't belive this is healthy for the game or the community. I guess it goes back to distribution & support. When a new user asks about a mod the typical responce posts are GWX rocks. Ok GWX rocks, and yes it absolutly does. It is a compilation of the most intense work and SH3 game play available. But I wonder what is it everyone is comparing it to? I read it has no equal, is that fair to other creatives? What else have you tried? Perhaps GWX's distribution has saturated to a point where the atmosphere is why bother. That may have something to do with SH4 released. With respect to the GWX team, the mods support and distribution, has it occured that it might not be what everyone is looking for? In the end this, all of this is just a game. The idea is for the player to have fun not be frustrated or intimidated. Ubisoft might have built the theme park but the talent creating mods makes the rides. From vanilla I tried a few smaller mods at first. Not only does this get feet wet but you sure learn how to use JSGME in a hurry. HatbourTraffic is a good mod, ok maybe not a super mod but imo if you never tried anything as such then how would you know how "super" your new mod realy is? it's all about the choice you make, not what choice someone else makes for you. I tried NYGM 2.0 I think it was. To be breif but honest I thought and maintain it's a good mod. I didn't care for the negative boyancy, or all the mines. At least I think it was those. To be fair at that time as a member of the suicide club I was into harbour raids, friggin could hardly get close. I've recently added some gas to my machine to give GWX another fair run. I belive things have come a long way even since 1.01 was out. Once you become versed in adding mods over mods getting things to your liking isn't such a chore. What turned me off to it was the inital changes for example in boyancy, identification etc. Granted now a days just mod your mod right? Whatever. Peice of cake if you have the time and know what to do and d/l. And so I tried War Ace Campaign and I like it alot, alot. It adds what I was looking for along with difficulty, challenge in the campaign - game play, graphic details and enhancements, traffic and I do mean traffic, air and at sea, historical battles on location, all that jazz. And it does this without changing some of the things I didn't want changed. Plus my machine get;s along with it more so now. So when I talk about what I like or want in the game I like to belive I know what I decided on and why. But that is just me (imo) I guess. I see alot of people asking about what to use, knowing that some of that is because they realy want someone else to make up their mind for them, which is kinda sad. That just boils down to when I see post after post hailing something but without ryme or reason why; then said post is just fluff. The playing feild is not equal boys and girls. Ehh, who cares as long as the fun is there. If you like SH3 how you have it good I say. If you don't there's always SH4, I don't mean that in a bad way. |
Well, I never post on subjects such as this, but now I'll make an exception.
To say download availability has an effect is out there to say the least! What happened to freedom of choice? Don't know how to use it? All the mods are listed and easy to get. I've tried everyone of them. And I will not dis any of them. Actually, I prefer MY version which I'll never put out cause it's mine. But for ANYONE to stand up and claim "I AM THE GOD!" is pure BS!!!! For anyone to say dominance of PR and D/L sites is the main reason for popularity, Uh, Can you say "BU** SH**!" Now, I'm off to whack Bears with my nail studded Bear pokeing stick! |

I'm not sure if you mean to insult by insinuating I don't know how to use my freedom of choice, I clearly have and will continue to do so. I do not belive ALL the mods are easy to get at. My point distribution makes some easier then others rather then having to wade through rubbish first. I am glad your enjoying your version, as you should. If you read my post and understood to belive I was saying otherwise I appologise as that was not my intention. ("But for ANYONE to stand up and claim "I AM THE GOD!" is pure BS!!!!") - agreed, actually. I do think there are several players who feel because of how they play they are better. It's called issues imo. ("For anyone to say dominance of PR and D/L sites is the main reason for popularity, Uh, Can you say "BU** SH**!") Now I may be getting old and slow on the take, but it sure sounds like your calling me & my post BS. Well, you are entitled to an opinion, but just remember it's just that an opinion. I don't belive I was being rude or insulting. In fact I was complimenting how the GWX team - players have gotten that mod out and go out of their way to help. Good luck with the Bears. |
Happy to see many people listing what add ons they are using with their super mod. I'm back to playing after not checking in here for months and months and am a bit out of the loop as to what the must have mods are. So this thread has saved me from starting my own thread asking about them. Heehee.
Gonna loook into this Depth Charge Shake v1.03 right now and add it to my GWX campaign when I get back to port. :up: |
@danurve,
My responce was intended to reflect upon your broad sweeping statements. Nothing was intended to point you out singularly. I apologize for comeing across that way. We tend to forget that we lack inflections of tone of voice, body language, and faceual (SP?) expressions, to go along with our posts. With that said, I'll just whack myself with my Bear stick! :rotfl: |

If I wanted your opinion, I'd slap it outta you. Now your Mommy says it's time to quit playing on the internet cause you got school tomorrow! |
Have tried them all
Started with Iub then Rub then GW Stayed with that Dual install for NYGM which didnt last long Replaced that with WAC Replaced GW with GWX and thats the game I play Its the style I like Choices are there for buoyancy etc now which is a good thing and IMO has as much if not more historical scripting than WAC Not played WAC in a while or updated it Not so easy to get hold of the files and even after D\L dont always want to work |

Sorry, I thought that was funny... Seriously, I just hate fanboys who take some kind of affront to some uber mod they happen to like and think someone is bad mouthing it, slam back with bu**sh*t this and bu**sh*t that, talk about sticks and bears :D , and then quick to apologize when they get called out on it and after they made their point for all to see! Typical behavior from users of this mod... Sorry, I shouldn't allow my emotions towards those underdog mods get the best of me... |

Me, I hate anti-fanboys that just like to be priggs cause their self-esteem is about as boyant as a bucket of cement. |

1. Visited "official" site. After numerous attempts, managed to connect piece 1 via megaupload. 2. Piece 1 successfully d/l...tried to d/l piece 2 via megaupload, was told to wait 196 minutes!!! 3. Tried depositfiles for piece 2...sorry, no slots in your country. Oh, and you must d/l this ActiveX control too. 4. Tried Tuddley's site (alternate mirror)...umm, where's the files? 5. Tried UBRS (alternate mirror)...umm, where's the files? 6. Tried the tribute site (alternate mirror). Files are in a different format and around 400mb greater in size due to the less efficient compression method used. Plus the file size quoted is also different to the actual size of the files. Would I be getting a true copy/representation of the original mod? I didn't want to chance it. So, I gave up. No WAC for me. I mean, it could very well be "the best mod in the world according to JScones" but I'll never know as I can't even download it. But on these first impressions... PS, I didn't even get a chance to figure out how to open the 000, 001, 002 extension files... I think support and distribution are JUST as important than the modding itself (or development of anything actually). No point creating something if you don't have an effective and robust way of distributing it. The GWX team simply realised this up front and provided appropriate resources to ensure that these factors didn't undermine the "GWXperience". If this is to the detriment of other supermods, well, we don't hold a copyright on effective distribution and support methods...and nor should we be criticised (that's like blaming Coke for being more popular than Pepsi because of Pepsi's marketing strategies). ;) And we certainly haven't forced anyone to choose GWX over any other mod, nor have we forced anyone to say that "GWX is cool". (If any of this sounds defensive, it's because some of your post seems a backhand compliment to GWX...but that's just my opinion. ;) Overall I generally agree with what you are saying though.) Quote:
If the former, then I will argue against quite stringently. If the latter, then I will agree with quite happily. But as I said above, no-one is stopping any modder from providing effective distribution and support for their product. ;) |

Speaking of being able to download stuff, what's the deal with FileFront?
Do you need to sign up to download stuff? I may have long ago but if so I can't remember my info if I did. Guess I can always do it again. Just wondering if that's needed or if there's some other reason I can't d/l from there. |
