1 - a word is used to insult a public figure, a word thats sole intent is to insult and alienate people on the basis of their sexual orientation.

2 - Candidate takes another's faux pas and turns it on it's head. He uses a word that was a compliment to begin with, and plays with it.

Er, yes. He's getting a pass because there's nothing harmful in what he said. Unlike Coulter. This is why it's not a double standard. The two situations are not comparable. Endy story. Had he called Edwards a redneck or something like that, then we'd have something to get concerned about.
