My strategy in GWX follows this line:
Port raiding only in late '39 Convoy attacks only: -when I don't have to chase them -weather is degrading -always if previously "wolfpacked" -at night use of deckgun to conserve torps when at all possible. attack on DD's only when I get the bounce on them...occasionally, I run into a unsuspecting one. search patterns are conducted over a portion of a quadrant (ie: ne corner of BE is a good one) and let the victims come to me. More often than not, the harvest is good. Shadow the shipping chokepoints. 6-8 hour intervals for a hydrophone dive I stay out typically til the fish are gone or have sustained really bad damage...like both scopes out...if can't see them, I can't target them! And I've also found out that the UZO, while handy, is worthless most of the time in setting up a reliable kill shot in rougher weather. In short...cloudy, somewhat foggy, and chop at night equals great hunting conditions. Really lousy weather (high winds, heavy fog and rain combined) I head for 50 meters down and ride it out...the hunting isn't that good in that kind of soup. Tramp steamers are generally more work than they're worth and I'll ignore them unless I can get the deck gun on them. I go for the large cargo's, large merchants, the pyros, tankers, etc. All others if they stray into my established kill area. |

Looks like one of my second patrols:shifty: . My patrols are like my sex life....I'm a two pump(patrol) chump;)[/quote]
LOL!! Just remember you said it first! |
I'm afraid the days of cutting through convoys like a razor blade and thumbing our noses at the DDs are long over. GWX put the kibosh on that.

Patrol number 3 COMPLETED!!!!!   As you can see it was a crappy patrol:nope: Got whacked pretty good by DD. The following problems sent me home: Boat would not stay at depth set when running 2kts, constant fight to keep my depth. DD would not leave me alone for over 2 hours....reason being I had to keep my speed up to stop the sinking. They kept hearing me...unlike my wife;) Rear torpedo room destroyed Hull integrity...you got me, but I was not taking chances, I went home:oops: Somewhere along the way my WO said he loves me:o .....time for a new WO :-? |
Ive come to the conclusion that your really a good sub skipper in SH3, but taking extraordinary risks that you ordinarly woudlnt do that your not mentioning in order to write dramatic after action reports. :88)

Sunk at Patrol 5... Hunting a Convoy near the british Eastcost in April 40... Depth: 55m Sunk a few Merchants, dived because of detection... Was hunted for hours. 4 Excorts appeared, ~300DCs counted. Heavy damages: http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/4...2223332rs6.jpg That was the last Damagescreen picture. Was lying on the ground for hours. Long time no DC´s (Think they were outta ammo) Suddenly all the guys were dead! i dunno whats happened. There was no DC hitting me etc. Suddenly - all gone... Game wasnt over yet. I was blowing all my Ballast to get to the surface. Minutes later they made swiss cheese outta me... My main mistake/What I have learned: Do not use "Longer repair Times LITE". No offence to the author, but to need 1200Minutes to stop the flooding is more than just unrealistic... Im sure that I would have survived with the usual repair times... Aynway, I had a dramatic evening, because I already lost the escorts a few times. Just as I thought I can make it out of there... All was coming to an end.:dead: |
Nah ... good `ol Hawky is just plain crazy.

I still say early war is a cakewalk ;)

Me too, after I adjusted my tactics accordingly. It gets ugly in 43, though.

Escorts arent the worry. Particuarly eary war, their active sonar's max elevation is fairly shallow, so their easy to lose. Go to about 200 meters or deeper, creep along at 100 RPM's, and they'll eventually go away.
However I do have three concerns in GWX in general: 1.) Being suprised on the surface by an HK group during calm weather in late war. 2.) Being caught on the surface by a Tin can at night in rough weather when your visibity is the poorest ( w/ no RWR or Radar), and theirs (via radar) is the highest. 3.) Being suprised on the surface at dusk/dawn by aircraft that dont have radar. RWR in GWX has ludicrious range, so you'll get plenty of advanced warning, its the other ones you have to worry about. |
