Im working on getting ready the hull for painting. I put aside the conning tower for now, and im planning on painting the whole lot together.
Color of conning tower is identical to hull above the waterline, so it is only wise to apply same mix of paint. Ill keep You all posted on the development in the shipyard. ;) |
Cant wait to see this boat painted.:D Looking great.

All the welds were filled, and im thinking of redoing them using different technique.

Im trying to keep it historically accurate, and im receiveing lot of help from the submarine guru called Dougie Martindale. He spant many years researching the type VII boats, and is willing to help. If You never been to his forum, heres the link: http://models.rokket.biz/index.php?topic=58.0  |
Bullnose.
Revells bullnose is in the wrong place, and of the wrong shape. The groove is also missing. http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/7...e002db5.th.jpg I could not find the right diameter tube, so i soldered it from the scrap sheet of brass: http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/1...e005uo9.th.jpg New hole, and groove: http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/7...1001ja3.th.jpg Tube in place, and some initial filling done: http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/8...2001rd0.th.jpg Once dry i will sand, and shape the lot to look much neater. :yep: TBC... |
Hi Siara,
for almost 1 Year I´m checking this thread for updates almost everyday and sometimes even more than once a day. Your replica of the early U-552 is...I can only repeat what others said before... a magnificent piece of work. But the intention of my first "active" post in this Forum, is not only adding a name to the list of people, who are honouring your work, but also possibly helping to solve a kind of little mistery regarding that little "box" on the bridge (see your picture below). I also read the post linked earlier on this page and there was a discussing regarding this piece, which seems to leave the function of that "box" unclear. This box is one of the 3 electric actuators for the boat´s rudder, one is inside the command center (Zentrale) just left of the depth plane stations (actually they had the same electric actuators), this was for submerged operation, one is inside the conning tower, for surface operation at sea and the one on the bridge was used most likely for manoevering in the harbour. You can see some reasonable photos of these boxes inside the boat, in the gallery section of U-995 on www.u-boat.net. The 3 letters "BBC" are the abbreviation for the manufacturer´s name "Brown Boverie & Cie" a former Swiss electronic equipment company, today it is belonging to ABB corporation. Looking forward to see the final progress of your project and hoping that this wasn´t the last post from you, regarding U-Boat models. To be honest I´m hoping that you are going to build the Type II, after finishing the Type VII:lol:... Best regards, Michael http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/7510/bbc2008ii7.jpg |
Thanks for clearing it up for me Gandalf71. I always wondered what it was for, and even my friends dad said the same thing i had some doubts. But now it is all clear.

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/755...3005tz5.th.jpg The SG was removed, and placed slightly back. Im in the process of filling the anchor well, because it is too deep in the kit. http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/2...3002ua9.th.jpg http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/648...3003zx0.th.jpg http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/764...3004ye8.th.jpg Some reference pics: http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/4...4sa7dr3.th.jpg http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/306...wicyqb8.th.jpg TBC... |
