Except that no MacOS updates are ever available for auto download and cost money.
I've had several Macs, and I almost never buy any software upgrades. Given Moore's Law, and the fact that major OS upgrades happen less than once a year (maybe every 2 years or so), chances are that I'd buy a new machine in the interval (given we have a 2 desktops (replaced an old one with the new, kept the old one in the kitchen), and a laptop in addition to my PC). New machine has latest system, and I install that on any others I want to upgrade.
When I got my iPhone4, there was some stuff that required a system upgrade for the old mac to see my phone. I called Apple, and they overnighted me a new OS for my old iMac for free. Then, a few days later, I got the "full" box version from them (also free (the first overnight was just a disk)). If I bought a phone that required Vista to sync, would M$ send me Vista for free?
