Except that no MacOS updates are ever available for auto download and cost money.

I've had several Macs, and I almost never buy any software upgrades. Given Moore's Law, and the fact that major OS upgrades happen less than once a year (maybe every 2 years or so), chances are that I'd buy a new machine in the interval (given we have a 2 desktops (replaced an old one with the new, kept the old one in the kitchen), and a laptop in addition to my PC). New machine has latest system, and I install that on any others I want to upgrade.

When I got my iPhone4, there was some stuff that required a system upgrade for the old mac to see my phone. I called Apple, and they overnighted me a new OS for my old iMac for free. Then, a few days later, I got the "full" box version from them (also free (the first overnight was just a disk)). If I bought a phone that required Vista to sync, would M$ send me Vista for free?

No, but then it would be backwards compatible, so you wouldn't need to upgrade.

The 3d party phone would be backwards compatible? Like a game that requires a latest gen vid card works with some 5 YO card just fine (with a different rev of DX and open GL into the bargain)?

Ie: you buy a device that requires Vista. You plug it into an XP Pro machine, and it doesn't work. You're saying the device would in fact work even though it doesn't? Or that all devices are always made backwards compatible to all older Windows versions?
