But he could be trying to win a victory for Russia on his own by getting close enough to decapitate the command-control; he doesn't have to be trying to destroy the world, only the small portion of it that belongs to us(that would entail destroying a good part of his part to but we are assuming he is mad and any responsible officer has to allow for that).
If all he wanted to do was launch his missiles, he could have done that from the Barents Sea. Unless you're an old Yankee or November, they didn't need to transit the GUIK Gap. So shooting him off the coast of Newfoundland, would have been very cowboy-ish.

First of all scrapping started in 2003 i have pictures of that, second of all any hotel class submarine can be painted and said to be K-19 simply because the russians changed nothing they are all identicle untill modified to which K-19 was modified to a hotel 2 as was a few others.

a yankee with SS-N-8 missiles would need to be near bermuda to launch at the east coast the missiles simply do not have the range, the deltas and typhoons do not even have to leave thier home ports to fire thier missiles at the USA.

Captain Ahabs revenge?

In one first season NCIS the crime was commited by an eco-terrorist who tried to get aboard a submarine to get revenge because, "sonar kills whales".
That one is a mite hard to believe active(from a sub?) might give one a bit of a headache but passive certainly wouldn't. Nontheless I believe I heard that one somewhere before. Where did it start? And what does sonar do to sea life, just out of curiousity?

Makes it go mad and beach whales and dolphins ect.

That's the problem, nobody really knows. They're pretty sure at this point LFA doesn't hurt whales, but the jury is still out on medium frequency active sonar. Almost every navy in the world has put proceedures in place to minimize the potential for problems, some of them more elaborate than others. The thing is, since nobody really knows specifically how active sonar causes problems for whales, there's only been some suspicious corrolations, nobody knows really what can be done to avoid problems, so some of the specifics of what needs to be done are squishy. Biologists opinions at this point say less about the science and more about their personal leanings, because it seems like they all argue the safest thing is to not use active sonar at all, which the world's navies simply aren't going to do. You can't tell a warship captain that he's can't defend himself because a whale might have problems. Until there's some real science things will continue to be ugly.

The good news is that the NATO undersea research center (SACLANT) in Italy has a program for trying to figure out how to identify and minimize the environmental impact of active sonar. Hopefully they'll be able to develop some solutions.

For the matter of that in a real war torpedos would certainly do lots of damage to sea life and no one is going to call off the war because of it. I wasn't being critical I was simply curious about the story.

Another gaffe in HFRO

Minor Bridge Officer of Red October: "He didn't 'slip on his tea' did he"
Exec: "I don't think I like your tone..."

Presumably he was speaking out of habit. Or was the Exec actually threatening to court-martial him for insubordination to a fellow mutineer?

An error from the list of errors:

Revealing mistakes: When Ryan and Mancuso are watching the plane crash-land into the aircraft carrier on the screen, there is very little sound and vibration on the actual ship.
Was there another Mancuso besides Bart who was on the carrier?

OneShot 06-21-07 02:56 PM

Nope, somebody mixed up the charakters. The names of the CAG, Skipper, etc dont even come close to "Mancuso".

Crimson Tide

The reason for the exterior shots being inconsistant is because anything the US Navy would not support the film in any way so they had to other countries' subs for many shots. I believe Israel owned the attack boat. The reason the USN didn't support the movie was because it concerned a mutiny on a US Naval vessel. There has never been a mutiny aboard a US Naval vessel.

My brother-in-law has served aboard the Wyoming and the Nevada working as the senior NCO is the missile room. I thought he was going to kick the TV he was so pissed by the level of liberties taken in order to make what was basically a proaganda film. (ok the last line was opinion and not fact truth is I liked the movie when I first saw it but after seeing it with him not so much.)

If that happened in real life everyone involved would have been court martialed and at the very least been discharged or been forced to resign their comission.
