Redtails look good to me.
I never even heard of Warhorse, should I be embarrassed? Sorry I watch little TV. I seen commercials for red tails. (the little I do see) I hope it can stand up, and glorify these men as they deserve. (and did not get back then) |
Hrm, can one judge an entire film from just a few scenes in the trailer?
Possibly not. One can judge whether he wishes to spend his entertainment dollar taking a chance on a film when the scenes the director chose to compose the trailer made WWII flight actions sequences appear impossibly cartoonish, and the dialogue as quintessential George Lucas. This reviewer is not going to waste his time, or his money taking that chance. Kind of like the reason I cannot watch Crimson Tide. I keep screaming, "That can't happen!!!" at the TV screen every five minutes. |

I wasn't sure how to feel when I saw the trailer, but I must admit to feeling disappointed by the choice of electronic music to advertise what is clearly a WWII movie. I'll give it a chance, though. |
Sad that this film is made by Lucas. He's a hack. The costuming people were OK according to a couple of the suppliers (who are unbelievably compulsive about the accuracy of their repro clothing).
|
Major reason for giving "Red Tails" a chance: Lucas did NOT write or direct this film! It was directed by Anthony Hemingway and written by John Ridley & Aaron McGruder. Lucas was executive producer; his main role was to organize and finance the project. His being a hack isn't really a factor this time!

The quality, or lack thereof, comes through in the trailer. IMO, George hasn't written a decent script since American Graffiti. |
Redtails I'll probably go out of my way to record it when it's aired on TV. Warhorse I'll probably go out.
|
Wow, I assumed he had way more to do with it (Lucas) given the way they drop his name with the press. I guess there are some people that don't think he sucks, so they use him to advertize, whoda thought?
Maybe I'll go see it instead of waiting for video. |
I watched an interview with Lucas and read more in the NYT; as exec producer he made the key decisions re the director & writers, so of course he shared his personal vision with them. Lucas said the project was meant to appeal in a retro way, in the style of 1940's WW2 movies, only with black heroes getting the John Wayne treatment this time. If it comes off as corny and jingoistic, it's because the vision is nostalgic and naive on purpose.
If the film does well at the box office, there will be a prequel and a sequel, with more prominent black directors at the helm. And Lucas himself will retire from "big" movies and make obscure little art films -- so he's been saying, at least. |
