I defo prefer the Type IX, Its a good choice ESPECIALLY if you're one of those who insists on manual torpedo targeting (more "fish" to fire)

I will say though that most overlook that the type IX had two purposes to its extremely long ranged design, one was indeed striking at far off targets (such as the Caribbean) the other was to be a "convoy killer", basically it was also designed to be able to stalk and repeatedly attack the same convoy "night after night" hence the large torpedo stores.

Having sailed in all of them apart from the new ones added in gwx and the type XXI im going to be different and say a type IXB. My reasons being that the IXB still has the same amount of torpedoes as a IXC but a faster dive time. It has a shorter range though which for some is major drawback. With the metox detector rigged and the quadruple barelled 20mm AA gun plus two other 20mm guns its an more effective defence against aircraft both through evasion and stand up and fight scenarios. I know this isnt an answer to your original post so I would have the VIIC out of the two boats. The dive time in a IXC is dangerously slow

In my opinion, IXC is much better coz of bigger range and 22 torpedoes instead of 14. But, in other hand, BdU will send you to patrol grids which are far away from your home port, and that will make your patrols long and a bit boring.

As a toss up between the type 7 or 9? Well I guess the type 9. Yeah I have to go with that. The type 9 hunted of the eastern cost at a location area called torpeido ally, also used to drop off spys from around that cost including Cannada. Very much a all pourpose boat. The type 7 has its pourpose too, it is a nice medium range attack boat, better handling, best one to use sneeking around shallow waters off locations too far for a type 2 thats for sure.

But I am a big boat kind of guy, and a type 9 has my name all over it!!!

I like big boats too... And my favorite is IXB. This U-boot type is a compromise between fast-diving VIIC and long-ranged IXC.

...just came across this ancient thread doing some errant research; and decided to vote (VIIC!). At certain point in the war, IX Uboats with their 22 eel full capacity could not remain surfaced long enough to transfer the steam torpedoes below decks due to incessant bomber coverage and rough unstabilzing seas. They stopped carrying the full allotment of topside eels in 1943. The VII, with the quicker crash-dive and a smaller crew to feed and 12 of 14 eels inside the vessel, was more economical and safer. Only steam torpedoes could be stored on the exterior deck as electric eels required constant maintenance and battery heating for full 5000 meter range. I like Type IX - more torpedoes (= more tonnage per patrol), better deck gun, range and good flak.

VIIC - The boat just seems to fit like a well worn glove. It gets the job done, and brings the crew home at the end of our patrol.


It might be imagined, but I feel the pride of the crew in fine German engineering.

Depends on what you want.

Objectively, the Type IX is the better boat. More range and more torpedoes makes it able to stay in the fight longer.

But, the type VII does have an advantage for being smaller. It is more nimble underwater and dive faster. So, from a defensive point of view and avoiding escorts it is a better boat.
