Additionally, the Map MFD is much much better in Orbiter 2010 than in 2006 too.
There's a lot of new toys for modders and coders too, so possibly even much more awesome addons will be released in the future.

Hello! I discovered Orbiter from this thread. I have never even heard about it before but it sounded so interesting I downloaded it. I've installed these mods:

-Shuttle Fleet V4.5
-Wideawake International
-UCGO 2.0
-OrbiterSound mod
-UniversalMMu

Are there any other good mods out there I should download?

Edit: Okay, I tried it a bit and realized I did not understand anything about it. Where should I start?

best intro guide I know of, though it's a little dated.

The guide uses IMFD though for transorbital injections not TransX, but I prefer IMFD myself. Though be aware that the guide is a bit behind and may not match up exactly with the current version of IMFD.

IMFD

There are also lots of useful MFD's you can grab from orbiterhanger (link below). You may also want to find yourself a good deep space ship with docking ports (one of my favorite things is touring the solar system with one and a delta glider for exploring planets). Lots of other nice addons too.

You could also checkout NNASP, though I don't know if it works with 2010.

As far as doing something with Project Apollo for Orbiter, especially if you are new to the sim, go with AMSO. Looks just as good or better then NASSP, and easier to get into. NASSP is great, but has a long learning curve.

AMSO plugs right into Orbiter 2010, real easy to install. Get it here-

As for add-ons, I use a couple of different spaceplanes:

DanSteph's DGIV-2
XR-2 Ravenstar (EDIT - I see that NeonSamurai already linked in Doug's Orbiter Page)
I almost forgot the TX with the Total Immersion virtual cockpit by vchamp.

For most of my heavy-lift delivery needs I rely on a combination of Kulch's Energia, Space Tugs, and Space Tankers. If you're ever interested in station building I highly recommend having a look at the Francophone Orbiter Community Website (Station Modules section). You can also find some really well made examples of CTV, and Progress vehicles in their Spacecraft section.

For MFD addons, the one I use the most is Attitude MFD V3.2. I find it very useful during docking approaches and for holding station with respect to another vessel (also very helpful during EVA).

There is also a UMMU/UCGO'd International Space Station :D:

I'll dig around for some resources that helped get me started with Orbiter.

I've played Orbiter a little in the past, but I had problems controlling the ships and understanding what was happening.

On question: Can it be played without a joystick?

Yes, it can. :yep:

You came to the right thread. What can we help you with? :know:

NeonSamurai 07-06-10 09:07 PM

it can be played with out a joystick though it can be tricky trying to fly a space plane like the delta glider in an atmosphere and also trying to land.

In space personally I prefer keyboard for fine thruster control

Thank you for your help with those tutorials. I played the apollo 11's first phase and what a feeling it was when the music startedf playing! I don't understand anything from the game and how the scenarios and others work, although I have had time to play it only once. When I have time I'll try to familiarize myself to it.

Look inside the orbiter docs folder.
You'll find the 2010 orbiter manual, which by the way is very well done.
Read it first, and then only then start reading the other tutorials that explain more specific/specialised topics.

I payed Orbiter back in the day and enjoyed it immensely, and so did my ten year old. I think I might check out this new one, though, it looks really good! :DL

It's definitely worth a look. A lot of the addons that weren't initially compatible with the new release have been updated, and more are still on the way. I've read that there is an effort to put a working solar sail into the simulation, too. :DL

Whoo... finally downloaded and installed the latest Orbiter yesterday, and sat through the Delta Glider earth-to-moon demo... I'm thinking this is gonna be like learning Falcon 4 all over again

She looks beautiful though, at least once you get into space. On the ground it looks like Flight Simulator 98' :p2:

As soon as I loaded up the sim and switched to the 2D instrument panel I had a flasuback to FS2000 :haha:

You can through the SDK. Requires C++ skillage and MS Visual C++ (you can use the free MSVC download available from Microsoft) to build or modify ships and MFD's at the code level. There are also third-party kits available such as SPSDK and a Panel SDK that allow creation of new ships/panels without needing a compiler. (those may not be compatible with the new 2010 release, though [EDIT] Or possibly even made obsolete with the new scripting interface...)

There's plenty of modding to do without knowing C++. The SDK is needed for any addon project as it contains the documentation for making addons. You can use Vinka's Spacecraft3 .DLL for all your animation needs and never touch a C++ compiler. Check out my addons at this website, http://www.orbithangar.com/ Do an Author search for ChristopherT. None of my addons used a custom .dll. I've been with Orbiter since before it had an autopilot! :haha:

That's going to change a bit once they get ORULEX up and running on Orbiter 2010 (it's designed for Orbiter 2006). That addon reads the surface maps of planets/asteroids/etc... and generates realistic terrains, making it possible to fly through a real canyon on the surface. See real mountain ranges, deep craters... etc... Not just textures overlayed on a ball.

Orbiter has become a REALLY addictive hobby for me. :DL

I forgot to mention SC3. :DL

What's the crack with Orbiter 2010 and Anti-Aliasing? Does it work?

If I'm correct it's a DX application but I force max settings through my card and I have jaggies galore, I leave it to application preference and still have jaggies, I even delve deeper into the launcher settings to enable forced AA multiplier within Orbiter itself and nothing.

I have this thing maxed graphically but the poor object AA is letting it down.

Any thoughts? ATI card in full screen mode @ 1920 x 1080.

Edit - LOL! Seems it only supports 4 x AA (at least on ATI) Fixed!

Dowly 08-12-10 09:05 AM

Not much a of an jaggies here with forced AA... must be that crappy ATI card of yours, they never into anything good. :O:
