They'll probably grant you a 10-days free trial coupon. For their upcoming SH "Pay to play" theme.

KiwiVenge 03-12-10 02:16 PM

Uplay 'points" maybe? Whatever those do.

Congratulations!

You receive another patch that fixes a few things. :haha:

That is EXACTLY what it means. That is what the DRM is all about, and anyone thinking otherwise is fooling themselves. The shareholders statement mentioned in another thread essentially confirmed their marketing strategy going forward, with this series as well as future Ubisoft games.

The DRM is not just copy protection and it never was...rather it is a means to sell us additional content whilst controlling distribution of that content at the same time. For this reason alone you can give up any hope of UBI removing the DRM for the life of the game, as it is inherent in their current marketing strategy.

This should not come as any surprise to anyone following current software marketing strategy with many other companies. It started with console games, and since the profit margins on paid DLC are higher than new releases...they are carrying this same strategy over to the PC market. Of course the only way that they can do that is through restrictive always-on DRM.

So yes, expect:

"New! Type IX upgrade available for only $14.99"
"New! Elite crew package w/ upgraded optics only $9.99"
"New! 6 new Merchant ships w/special FX only $14.99"
"New! Camo pack for type VII and IX only $9.99"

Think I am wrong? They already test-marketed this with the U.S. "Gold Edition" which was nothing more than a few rare skins and a manual that should have been included in ALL versions...for only $10 more. Anyone that paid for the "Gold Edition" proved to UBI that there is a market for DLC add-on sales.

The idea has already shown itself in games such as Rise of Flight and Wings of Prey, so don't be surprised to see it applied to SHV very very soon...

(by the way, I am NOT defending this...just calling it for what it is, as some do not seem to be aware of what is coming) :damn:

They will provide us with microchip for dogs... I mean for players...

As soon as you loose connection - it will register all your bitching, crying and shouting via satelite !

No need to vomit at Subsim loo... if you're DRM sick.

Just you and Ubi... forums free.

I knew their free gift:

Their shortened answer to my email from sunday was:

Please download the freeware KMDIAG-Tool. Send us the logs of your system and we will help you to get off the problems of your system.

Original in German:
"Um die Ursachen solches Phänomens besser zu verstehen benötigen wir zumindest rudimentäre Informationen über Ihren PC.
Bitte laden Sie das KMDIAG-Tool herunter. Erstellen Sie Systeminformation-Datei und hängen Sie diese an Ihre Anfrage."

NICE they want to analyze my computer because their server was down.

Bingo - a free check of my computer by ubisoft - i'm so happy.

Unfortunately I complete agree. And it complete agrees with Ubisofts 2009/2010 strategy paper that you can find on their Corporate website ("...reuse of engine... and more regular releases of their franchises" etc). When a few weeks ago I read about that in "Rise of Flight and Wings of Prey", I just started laughing tears. Similar to the idea of all the MORPG or any other online game that "provides you new content regularly", this is one way to achieve the highly desirable binding of customers to your franchise, and only yours. So the OSP scheme fits in this perfectly, and will in the future probably go down that route. No surprise, is it?

Anyway, if SHV is so moddable, we should probably not need to pay for addons, at least as long as they don't contain major engine changes and added core functionality. And as long as Ubisoft doesn't put a barrier up to modding certain things (such as adding the type IX for example). So maybe it will work for online games, or casual players that don't know about and don't follow modding progress, but once you discovered subsim.com, you probably will simply download the desired "addons".

UBI will award the players with... brace yourselves men... a waterproof bumper sticker that you can apply on your beloved sub. Each captain will receive his/her sticker next time they dock at the home port. It will surely increase your epic awesome coolness level once it's attached to your submarine not to mention it gives a 20% increase in Deck Gun damage, so merchant ships beware! :arrgh!:
