He talks about the 16k SH4 scene for SH3!

Reece 02-27-08 07:12 PM

This is rather hard to explain, first off there is no 16k SH4 Scene mod, there are too many problems that can't be resolved, almost any adjustments by even "1meter" in either direction will cause a black sky. Adjusting the visual sensors will make your crew, map etc show the ships, aircraft etc up to 12k, the horizon remains at 8k, however on a clear day when the crew sites a ship at close to 12k you can still just see the smoke, the best way is to try it out, the beauty is your crew can detect a plane in time to dive (in most cases), to safety!:yep: I will edit this post later with a download link for GWX 1.03 & 2 versions.:D

**** EDIT ****
This is most embarrasing to me, Both Sensors in GWX 1.03 & 2.0 are set to 12000m & 16000m as standard! Stock SH3 is 8k & the version I'm using is part of a set done for NYGM mod that is based on stock.
What this means is that using the 8k mod in either GWX 2 or 1.03 the visual range is the same as the 16k version.:yep:
Sorry about the confusion!

I've readed 3 times your last "edit" and I didnt understand squat...

Does this mean that the scene.dat isn't fully compitable with GWX??

Not at all, they (GWX Team) have set their sensors.dat to be the same for 8k or 16k, as I explained the SH3 world as you see it is 8k for the 8k version & 16k for the 16k version, the crew can see to 16k in 16k version but the crew can see to 16k in 8k as well, it's just that you can only see to 8k from the conning tower, in the 8k version the crew have x-ray vision & can see over the horizon!
After close examination I found that with the 8k version I can actually see to 12k on a clear day & as Sailor Steve pointed out you can see light house's even further as they are higher & emit a bright light, probably to around 16k in 8k scene,:yep: that is why I set mine to 12k.
The GWX 8k atmosphere is really incorrect but most people want their visuals higher that is probably why it's left that way.
I hope I explained it better.
Another explanation:
SH3 was created with a visual range to 8km (about 6.5miles) in the Scene.dat file, the crew or U-boats visual range was also set to 8km in the Sensors.dat file, later modders changed the visual range to 16km, adjusting both Scene.dat & Sensors.dat. GWX produced an 8k Scene.dat & 16k Scene.dat but only 16k Sensors.dat.
If anyone wants I can put it down to 12k, just let me know.:D

Philipp_Thomsen 02-27-08 09:48 PM

:rotfl: Now I can understand it perfectly!

Thanks, Reece!

Thansk for the explanation Reece, so what this means is:

1. If I use GWX 2.0 16K Scene file both myself and my watch crew will be able to see things 16K away BUT I can't use the SH4 effects for SH3 mod as its only compatible with the GWX 8K Scene file.

2. If I use GWX 2.0 8K Scene file my watch crew will be able to see things 16K away BUT I will only see things 8K away. However, I will be able to use the SH4 effects for SH3 mod.

So the choice is a toss up between rendering the 3D world to only 8K but having a more realistic SH4 scenery, or rendering the 3D world to 16K and sticking with SH3 scenery.

the question that remains then is:

Does the Sh4 effects for SH3 mod with 8K viz combined add more immersion to GWX than just the 16K viz ? I suppose the only way i'm going to answer this is to give it a try after my current patrol.

:yep:

You can use the SH4 Scene as long as you do not have the GWX 16k atmosphere enabled or you will get a black sky, otherwise you can, the 16k atmosphere is an option of GWX.:yep: Note that using the 8k atmosphere either SH4 Scene or GWX Scene you will still have crew visuals to 16k!

Yes.

That's about the size of it, do a compare and please yourself, note things like sea colours, sunset & sunrise, reflections, horizons, in various weather conditions, take some snaps.:yep:
Cheers.

Sorry to butt in guys, but just to clarify, the SH4 effects for SH3 mod is not compatible with GWX 2.0... regardless of whether the 8km environments or 16km environments are used.

Believe me, there is no joy in saying it. However, either we keep saying it, or we end up on yet more wild goose chases.

Like they say though, when all else fails, read the instructions.;)

Reece 02-28-08 07:11 AM

Hey Kpt. Lehmann, your getting the mods confused again, this is not RB's SH4 Effects for SH3, this is my SH4 Scene for SH3, this was out way before RB's mod!:yep:
I must admit though that the 2 names are similar!!

Uber Gruber 02-28-08 08:09 AM

Aha....now the penny drops, I was confusing the RBs SH4 Effects for SH3 with Reece's SH4 Scene for SH3. This is why i persisted with the question because it was not clear to me that they were seperate mods, I actually thought your mod Reece was a modified version of RB's mod.

My apologies. I'll try your mod Reece after my current patrol.

Thanks.

Gee I didn't even pick that up, even though I placed the remarks in quotes!!
I need some new glasses!!:rotfl:

Totally different, one is the environment & the other SFX.

Kpt. Lehmann 02-28-08 08:49 AM

It could always be worse.

It might have been the "SH4 Special Scene for SH3 Eating Grapes While Playing the Ukelele Upside Down GWX 2.0 Compatible Version 1.34c With Diagonal Stripes Mod by Rumpelstiltskin"
