I’m not a computer wizard here; real estate and development is my business. It just seems to me though that a game that demands much more system requirements to run would not run as good as a game that has less requirements like SH4 for example. If the CTDs that people are experiencing with SH4 are not related to the game’s design then why could I run IL2 for many years in the past on the borderline computer that I had back then and never experience one CTD? I can also now run Armed Assault Combat Operations on my present system (not that I am particularly fond of that game) and I never have a CTD and it requires more system specs than does SH4. I don’t buy into the notion that it is just a computer hardware issue. That may have something to do with it but IMHO it is more because of the way that the game was put together and designed in the first place. Just my ideas! :know:

not exactly, but worse it re-booted my machine. of course i hate that. but there have been a few games that do that since i got the new rig.
only one game reboots it regularly, and i dont play that anymore obviously. it was a well known issue with the nvidia drivers. as far as i know the world still waits for new drivers from them.... SH4 only did it once so far, while loadng a save game. it just took a little longer, and suddenly was re-starting. |
CTD's
My first CTD was on Day 1 (23/03/07), too many sequential key presses, ergo my error.
"2nd was 'A' key, tried it for laughs. Subsequently no CTD's or BSOD's nor any 'SAVE 'game issues to date, submerged or otherwise. (touches wood, avoiding splinters in head). Have only run game on 1024x768 res with most of the eye candy switched off as monitor does'nt support much higher. New monitor stolen by daughter). Edit Me and my big mouth, within an hour or so of this post a CTD !!! Reloaded the save game and was all OK.. |

What I'm thinking here is the game engine has not been optimized yet. Just a thought on that and stability. |
I had CTD only when i attempt to play many missions without reboot... specially if i have many programs running into the background, in example when make mods, i may habe Photoshop and ACD SEE opened...
But the game give advices... the load up screens become too slowly, the mouse become sticky, the FPS become reduced... then it is time to reboot, if i do not rebot, sure in the next mission the load up screen freezs or if i reach to enter into the mission... game CTD... I think it is a memory fragmentation problem :hmm: Of course, if you make a bad tweak, a single text line can cause a c CTD, but is not realted to the program, it is caused by merged mods or to bad touching the files.:up::up: |

Video card correlation?
Given that the GPF's I'm expereincing are all associated with NTDLL and Video driver libraries, I wonder if there might be a correlation between the folks who have and have not had GPFs, and the video hardware they're running? For instance, I have an nVidia card (8800GTS) and I have frequent GPFs.
So.... Is anyone running ATI hardware experiencing frequent GPFs? Is anyone running nVidia hardware not experiencing frequent GPFs? Might help to solve the problem if we can ID a common denominator. JD |
Since 1.2, absolutely not a single CTD. Very stable for me.
I got one on 1.1 : The game asked me to launch "don't remeber what", or "postpone" while there was no reason to ask this .. ; i choose postpone and CTD. But again, since 1.2, the game run like a charm. Maybe 80 hours playing yet. WindXP SP2 ATI X1900XT 512Megs (7.3) 2gigs RAM |

CTDs vs bugs
No CTDs, except once. But that was caused by the installation. So, a reinstall did the trick. Never had a problem since.
I agree with AVGWarhawk that bugs do not create random crashes. As some people experience crashes while others don't, and for some people these crashes are at times pretty random as well, it means that environment specific factors are involved. In other words, it is the combination of the game and the OS, drivers, hardware. That is: - difficult to figure out - nine out of ten times, it is not the software itself, but some outside cause Only when you can consistently reproduce the issue on various pc, is it SHIV related. And for most people, CTDs probably mean there is something wrong with their system and not with the game. You may want to check the MS website on how to startup windows as clean as possible. A lot of stuff is started up in the background that you do not need. On my own pc that is - a background running service for iTunes - a background running service for iPod - a background running service for a webcam - a background service for my videocard And none of these services show up in the in-tray or anything. But they can cause problems when 'fighting' for resources. Same thing for virus scanners. Real memory hoggers. And what happens when they start running for a background scan? |
The only CTD I know of that was definitely caused by SH4 was the one caused by the 'end of war' bug. This was fixed in version 1.2.

I don't play SH4 anymore. But when I did I have to admit I didn't have any more CTDs than I had with SH3. Go figure.
|
Well what started as CTDs now just simply shut my pc off!! It's happened all morning long now. About 6 times or more! I've tried using the medium graphic setting and it still happens. I tried reseating the video card and the ram. The last time I was in the navigation map screen had just clicked on the management button at the bottom. I'm thinking now that it might be power supply, a 600 wt Xeon. It appears that the video is demanding something that the power supply can't give it and just gives up! This is not a regular occurance with my system. As much as I can see where my power supply might be part of the issue, I would also think that the game engine could be stabilized a little

Sustained gameplay for me = CTD. Always. I used to play in short infevals, one hour real time tops. Now that I try 3 hr sessions I crash quite often. Annoying.
