If they are supposed to be blimps escorting convoys, you might want to make them look more like this:

Wrong. US blimps were filled with nonflammable helium, and they had no rigid structure. At best you would make a 3.46" hole through it, causing it to eventually float down and land. At least one blimp was shot down by a u-boat, but for the most part they never got that close to the water. They would stay high up and guide the destroyers in, since the blimp could see the u-boat when it was far beneath the surface.

Not one ship was lost from convoys protected by blimps.

Okay now this has to be about the coolest thing I've seen today, and today's been a pretty good day thus far for cool thing seeing.

I can't wait to see what happens with this.

The test model was used to see if it was possible to get it to fly at very
low speeds.

For some reason, a plane mimicing an Air Ship just didn't cut it!:nope:

I am working on a new model from scratch that will more accurately
portray the WWII model.

I've nearly got a Barrage Balloon model finished also.:|\\
Although I doubt I'll do anything other then model it.

We'll see where it goes after that.

Great job! One of my favorite scenes from "Saving Private Ryan" was seeing the huge convoy with all the barrage balloons over it - now maybe we can relive that in Silent Hunter 3.

This is the image I'm using for the Barrage Balloon.

This is amazing work:o :yep:   . Can't wait to see it in game. Every other week something new and cool always pops up on this forum:D

Kudos priater! You win the "best new idea for SH3" award...

Blimps were an important part of the anti-sub efforts by the US Navy- if you can make this and barrage balloons work it would be fantastic mate!

Best of luck! :|\\

Sweet!

:o Excellent! A couple of questions - How does the game treat these objects? Can they be damaged & destroyed, or are they in the "Environmental" category? Also, is there a way to model the cables?

Madox58 01-01-07 11:33 PM

I've only built the model and am doing some fine tuneing on it now.
The detail on the fins makes the model to big .
(and when I UV mapped it I freaked! :o )
Detail can be done on the skin and look just as good.
Rounded the nose more also.
Adding cables to it is a simple step.
I've done nothing with it as far as how the game would handle it.
We'll see where it goes from here.:hmm:

Hello.

Well everyone is giving prais, let me be the 1st to say:

Look Balloons http://www.bombs-away.net/forums/ima...lies/hyper.gif

I WANT ONE

I was doing reseach on ships named Enterprise and was surprised to find that the U.S. Navy actually had an Airship with that name.

TarJak 01-02-07 02:20 AM

Has anyone thought of using the same technique for modelling the Falke auto gyro?

fantastic! not goodyear adverts me hopes :D
Do they have any collision implemented so they actually take planes down?

Well, pretty much tried every combination one could try.
Speed, mass, drag, you name it. :nope:

Time to try a new approach as I'm just :damn: at this point.
Drop the speed to much, SPLASH!
Drop the mass, raise the speed, SPLASH!
Good learning though!
An airplane or a helicopter go up despite being heavier than the air because of a mechanical force propelling them. But a ballon is essentially lighter than the air.

If all things in SH3 are attarcted down to simulate the gravity, then why don't you simply add NEGATIVE mass? Try to see if the game accepts negative mass values, that would equal to lift....

Good luck

You had to show this thread to Bernard.

Barrage balloons my ass. Anti-aircraft measure my ass. He's to be "forcibly disembarked" at the first port we reach.
