They did have a copy on VHS - English dubbed (yuck!). So Das Boot will have to wait.

I bought the uncut version today after having owned the Director's Cut for years. What a difference!! There's so much more to the uncut version which would have confused or bored the American audiences, but for Kaleuns like us is invaluble!

Some of the best parts left out of the Director's Cut:

Talking about the "Old Gang". Clearly Purchnow's character is up there with the greats. He's mentinoned along with Prien, Kretschmer, Schepke, Endrass, Krech. Names which would mean absolutely nothing to a Hollywood audience.

When the phone rings and Thompson, drunk and rolling, screams "ALAAAARRRMMM!!" and ducks. Then breaks into talk about the ****ty eels, how torpedo failures are more common and they suspect sabotage.

A lot more with the crew, some of whom have.. interesting tastes. :)

I originally had the VHS edition that came on 2 tapes, and then gave it to my Grandfather who served in the Merchant Navy during the war (he loved it up untill the ending). I then went and bought the directors cut DVD, and must admit, It's not as good. Heaps of stuff missing.

Actually I have never seen it either..though I am watching it right now on the Action Channel. Not sure I will be able to sit through it all as it runs from 7:20am-12:30pm EST.

Bummer. Frankly its worth buying. You will probably watch it more than once.

I also agree, buy it! The original uncut version adds alot to the 'how it was to live in the uboat'-part of the movie. Tho, make sure you have enough time as it is almost 5 hours long.

Yes, you have absolutely right.
I strongly recommend to watch only uncut version.

No matter how many times we've had this thread it always gets the multi-page result.

This movie ought to be in school. Immigrants ought to be given a copy of Das Boot uncut, SH3, and a computer and told that they can't be citizens until their first successful convoy attack.

SubSerpent 09-08-06 07:35 PM

I think the movie should be run 24hrs a day on free public TV throughout the world for all eternity! That way when there is nothing else you want to watch, you know there is something worth watching after all. It should be rated "G" also, so that parents know that the movie is good for their 3 year old childern to watch alone. It'll help to put hair on their chest at a nice young age! :know:

Everytime I watch the movie it strikes me what a great actor Jürgen Prochnow is. He shows the whole spectrum of emotions. From the confident commander in the docks of La Rochelle to the beaten man in the Straits of Gibraltar. Klaus Wennemann as the LI also did a great part, just like i saw this character in the book.

All together now:

Up to mighty London came
An Irish lad one day,
All the streets were paved with gold,
So everyone was gay!
Singing songs of Piccadilly,
Strand, and Leicester Square,
'Til Paddy got excited and
He shouted to them there:

It's a long way to Tipperary,
It's a long way to go.
It's a long way to Tipperary
To the sweetest girl I know!
Goodbye Piccadilly,
Farewell Leicester Square!
It's a long long way to Tipperary,
But my heart's right there.

Paddy wrote a letter
To his Irish Molly O',
Saying, "Should you not receive it,
Write and let me know!
If I make mistakes in "spelling",
Molly dear", said he,
"Remember it's the pen, that's bad,
Don't lay the blame on me".

It's a long way to Tipperary,
It's a long way to go.
It's a long way to Tipperary
To the sweetest girl I know!
Goodbye Piccadilly,
Farewell Leicester Square,
It's a long long way to Tipperary,
But my heart's right there.

Molly wrote a neat reply
To Irish Paddy O',
Saying, "Mike Maloney wants
To marry me, and so
Leave the Strand and Piccadilly,
Or you'll be to blame,
For love has fairly drove me silly,
Hoping you're the same!"

It's a long way to Tipperary,
It's a long way to go.
It's a long way to Tipperary
To the sweetest girl I know!
Goodbye Piccadilly,
Farewell Leicester Square,
It's a long long way to Tipperary,
But my heart's right there.

This is one of the best moment of Das Boot for me, I like to hear The Tipperary song at high sound level

Still whaiting for the uncut version that I ordered...

SabreHawk 09-09-06 01:38 PM

I just recently purchased the original uncut Das Boot,(293 min.) and I have been in Das Boot heaven ever since.

In fact if you havent seen the original uncut one, you really havent seen Das Boot.
I've been a fan of this great film since it released back in the 80's and it is THE best naval film ever made IMO.

But I warn you, dont have the movie on while playng SH3, the pinging that was going on in the film really had me fooled one night.
