Thanks for that link Don. Here are the results of my efforts at building your amazing whiz wheel:

Not exactly a professional job, but good enough. I used the same cardstock in my printer that I use for QSL cards, and I laminated both sides of each wheel individually. I laminated the outer wheels together, so that it is double-sided.

What I am wondering about (since I haven't had the opportunity to use it yet) is whether I should just pretend that meters = yards, or should I apply the correction?

Great job, Bill.

If you have any thin, clear, plastic lamination lying around...you could make two excellent cursors for your whiz-wheel, one for each side (if you have not already done so). Make them long enough to span from the center pin to about 1/2 in. beyond the outter edge.

(Nice Rig, BTW  )

Math: I always convert Kilometers into Nautical miles-- Km x .54 = nm.

QSL card stock is the perfect size!

actually, i piece of white thread, threaded from the underside of the wheel , in the center of the wheel, with a small needle works the best. the small knot at the end of the thread prevents the thread from poping thru the wheel, and makes a great bearing indicator.

this is a field expedient method. the thread should be long enough to reach alittle beyond the outer ring of the wheel.

Good idea, Greyrider.

...in my days under the ruck, I used waxed dental floss on my protractor :)

Thanks. It's a Kenwood TS-520. Built like a battleship, and twice as tough. I've had it for about 15 years now and the tubes are still good. The key is a Chinese Army key. Again, built like a battleship. I mostly operate CW, except during things like Submarines on the Air and Museum Ships weekend when most of the operations are on SSB.

I've been thinking about laminating a piece of black thread for a cursor. What I would do is lay the thread on a piece of the lamination (on the sticky side, of course) Then lay another piece of lamination over it and cut it to suit. I can see the need for a cursor on the one side, but not necessarily on the Nasmith side, although I suppose it couldn't hurt. That is my next step.

By the way, that trick with the push pins is just about the best way to connect the wheels together.

Would be cool if we had some resident programming gurus to cook up an online whiz wheel.

Hey Don,

Where did you download that very nice compass I can see on your screenshot ?

thanks for sharing the link.

Don't forget that u-boat.reasimulation is down, so an alternative download (e.g. rapidshare ) would be quite nice.

thx

That is an excellent MOD by FLB sale U-999

I believe you can still find it here:

Did anyone have any luck with making a Virtual Sliderule or the Wizzwheel in a virtual version...?

Phoenix3000 12-04-06 10:12 AM

Hi, this is a great idea -

@don1reed - I clicked the link to get the whizzwheels, but it's no longer active - anyone know where they are located now?

Thanks all,

Px3000

Try this site for "Build your own sliderule":

phonix i have it here if you want it in a mail.

What i was asking for was the virtual sliders - not how to make a real one (done that already)

Phoenix3000 12-08-06 11:28 AM

@Mav87 - Hi, can you please email them, that would be excellent!

Here's my email:

Replace (at) with @ - helps to stop the spammers!

Thanks a million!
