I take this as a veiled reference to Herr A. Hitler. Don't compare Skybird's or anybody's view on this forum with Hitler without the strongest evidence. To make this suggestion against a German from the post-war generation is really a blow below the belt.

Rabbi puts Old Testament curse on the enemy

By Ed O'Loughlin Herald Correspondent in Jerusalem
March 28, 2006

AS ISRAEL goes to the polls today, the spiritual leader of the country's largest Jewish religious party is promising heaven to those who vote for him and hell to anyone who supports the acting Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert.

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, 86, the spiritual leader of the ultra-Orthodox Sephardic Jewish party Shas, has issued an election flyer based on passages from the books of Judges and Deuteronomy - "Cursed be its inhabitants for not having come to God's aid" and "Cursed be those who do not uphold and obey the words of this law."

He adds: "I hereby issue a religious ruling that everyone must vote for Shas."

Rabbi Ovadia has previously stated that anyone who votes for Shas will go to heaven whereas supporters of Mr Olmert's front-running Kadima will be consigned to hell.

Regarded as God's man on Earth by many ultra-Orthodox Jews of non-European origin, Rabbi Ovadia has long played an active role in Israeli politics. His Shas party has held as many as 17 seats in the 120-seat Knesset and played kingmaker in several government coalitions.

Recently, however, the party has been partially eclipsed by corruption scandals and by the resentment of many secular Israelis who believe that most ultra-Orthodox Jews are taking advantage of the state's largesse to avoid military service and live on welfare while ostensibly studying religion.

The rabbi has previously condemned Arabs to hell and last year blamed Hurricane Katrina and the Indian Ocean tsunami on US support for the withdrawal by the Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, of illegal settlements from Gaza. He also cursed Mr Sharon for this "disengagement" from holy Jewish soil, saying he would "sleep and not wake up" - this was taken by many supporters to foreshadow the stroke that has left Mr Sharon comatose since January 5.

Although polls suggest that Shas will hold the 11 seats it won in the last Knesset, opinion surveys are proving particularly volatile in this campaign, with predictions from different polls often varying by several seats for the same party on the same day.

The mass daily Maariv has reported that Mr Olmert's party is worried about reports that "a series of astrologers, future-tellers and various mystics interviewed by the media in the past few days" have all predicted a huge last-minute upset for Kadima, which has seen some slide in its support in recent days.

From a peak prediction of 40 seats, the party is now tipped to win from 34 to 37 - still probably enough to lead the next government but vulnerable to a potential far-right blocking group of Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud, far-right pro-settlement or anti-Arab racist parties and perhaps Shas and the smaller Ashkenazi party, United Torah Judaism.

Mr Olmert has described the poll as a referendum on his plan of "convergence".

This sequel to Mr Sharon's withdrawal from Gaza would see Israel unilaterally setting its own borders along the line of the so-called "separation barrier" inside the West Bank, annexing parts of the occupied territories without Palestinian consent and withdrawing some smaller illegal Jewish settlements.

Thanks Abraham. Good moderating. Not too much, not too little. Your action got noted ;)

And Rabbi Ovadia Yosef blames President Bush and US citizens for the death and carnage attributed to Hurricane Katrina. What a great guy NOT! :nope:

Pat Robertson, I believe it was (though I might be wrong as I have trouble keeping the evangelical fundies straight), did something similar too: blamed Katrina on the victims who he said brought it on themselves because there was so much sin in New Orleans.

Konovalov 03-28-06 06:30 AM

Yeah, I remember that. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef also said some 'charming' things about Sharon which I'm sure Sharon's family rightly were disgusted with.

Also well before that wack-job naive President of Iran called for the wiping off the map and destruction of Israel recently, the spiritual leader of the Shas Party in Israel, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, had in 2001 called for the annihilation of Arabs in one of his sermons. A fundie is a fundie no matter the religion.

It is indeed remarkable to understand that the Qu'ran is progressive.

Certainly British society is being reformed lately.

These words may be prophetical. I can only say I share Tony's fears.

Altough Blair is using an euphemism and tries to speak 'politically correct', we have to admit that he's right.

@ Skybird:
You have taught us the same story in other words...
:D

The day that these things come to pass on my land is the day that we better start shooting. To allow a religion that thinks it is allright to kill another just because they converted out of the said religion, is not OK. This type of religion must be removed from the Earth forever.

But your ancestors who suffered for such a state of life being overcome, will turn in their graves.

Of course! Once they take over, slaughtering the infidels and having Islamic law will be defined as the progressive, better way to run a society.

Remember, the good always win, because the winners will redefine "good" if necessary. ;)

Of course, everything should be done to prevent that from happening, in this case.

I almost agree with every word you've said about Rabbi Yosef. However, I'll take partial exception with your last sentence, link and claim.

Ask yourself this: is there an imperative Torah based command to kill Arabs because they are Arabs or is Rabbi Yosef basing himself on responding appropriately to current events?

Ask yourself something else: Rabbi Yosef and the Shas party have a relatively gigantic following. In yesterdays national elections, Shas came in 3rd place, with 13 out of 120 Knesset seats. And there are plenty more people that didn't vote for Shas but respect Rabbi Yosef.

How many acts of violence against Arabs can you attribute to Rabbi Yosef's rantings? Yes, rantings is how I see them.

Remember, Yosef is regarded as one of the highest authorities in Jewish law for Sepharadi Jews worldwide. So ask yourself another question: how come we Jews - or at least the vast population of Sepharadi Jews in Israel - are not slaughering Arabs right left top bottom and center?

micky1up 03-29-06 09:04 AM

see guys this is a world of free speach and opinion so i can compare people to whom i like , skys post painted the whole religion involved as bad casting the entire populas of that religion , at very best hes a hypocrit complaining that islam is bad and all involved and complaining about goverments actions in fighing the extremists inside the religion if he had his way we would just gladly let them get away with there acts of blatant terror but complain if anyone duz anything about it .

im interested what duz he think we should do about it ? im guessing its probably in the style of norman kember
