Egan, I did mention "The Enemy Below"- I seem to remember it having two different endings. One where both the sub and the DD are destroyed as the captains salute one another, and a different one where the US capt helps the German capt evacuate his sub with a wounded sailor. Or am I completely insane?

I wasn't aware there were two endings for this movie! I have a copy of the one where the wounded sailor is helped off the boat. Both vessels are destroyed when the U-boat's scuttling charges go off. Movie ends with both captains on the fantail of another US warship.
I would like to see this other version with an alternate ending.
That is a little closer to the real-life incident, where both DD and U-boat went to the bottom. Although in real life none of U-405's crew survived, and about half of the DD crew lived..

I think you're thinking of "The Enemy Below". Good movie, ubt I've seen it with two different endings.

Two different endings? The one i've seen is the DD crew rescues the U-Boat crew and Robt. Mitchum rescues Curt Jurgens and his mortally wounded pal Heinie by throwing a rope from the DDs deck to the conning tower.

How does the other version end?

That scene does remind me though, wasn't their sneak thru the straights interupted by an A/C, kind of crappy weather to be flying in (esp. at night) IMO.

Anyway Das Boot wins for realism easily over all the others I have seen. I remember enjoying U-571 thouroughly untill the 2 subs engage each other in a underwater jousting match, at which point I lost it and started laughing out loud. Took me forever to explain to my friends why that scene would have nearly been impossible for WWII subs. The writer of that scene had probably seen Red October and Crimson Tide and was trying to follow suit. LOL

Yes, I had the same reaction to the similar sub-v-sub duel in 'In Enemy Hands', and likewise I was indignantly lecturing my long-suffering girlfriend about the implausibility of the scene. Of course I'd more or less given up hope for that movie much earlier on, when the US naval brass decided in their wisdom that with U-Boats menacing the eastern seaboard, the best way to counter the threat was to send out a submarine to sink the U-Boats.

I have a confession to make.. I haven't seen "Run Silent, Run Deep"

Das Boot for sure over the other one

Das Boot for me. I think the actors did a great job.

Das Boot is not only the best Sub movie, it is one of the top three War movies ever made.

Both the other two were 'Kelly's Heroes' but you all knew that anyway.....Didn't you? ;)

:D

hehe kellys heroes rock

"WOOF WOOF" (Odd-ball)

Das Boot. At least that's the only one I pull out and watch once a month.

The Enemy Below only has one ending. The two captains do rescue the German first mate, who dies anyway. Then they are picked up by another DD.

Sorry, but I don't consider Kelly's Heroes a great war movie, or even a great movie. Fun, yes, but hardly great.

Didn't see Up Periscope or Torpedo Run on the list, and they're both pretty good.

Das Boot, by all means...

u 571 was not captured by the americans... why the **** do the americans gotta lie about that ****? they captured another boat, why not just tell that story? instead of stealing the credit from young lads who fought and died?

I'm an American and I think that movie was pure garbage. Unfortunately, I have no control over what some jaded Hollywood moguls think the nation and the world wants to see. I'm sure to their way of thinking WW2 is some giant bad guy versus good guy comic book they can re-edit as they please to increase box office receipts. Frankly, I'm shocked they even bothered to put the disclaimer at the end of the movie giving proper credit to the British for first capturing Enigma.

melnibonian 02-08-08 02:00 AM

Das Boot all the way for me. It's by far the more realistic and less "heroic" of all the other movies
