You have to lip sync; the acoustics of a football stadium, particularly an indoor stadium are really disorienting (various echoes at varied time delays, etc.) and are worse in a show of the type like a Superbowl half time show, what with all the running around a performer has to do. There is also the "fail-safe" aspect: if a piece of equipment, especially a microphone goes out, you have a situation such as befell the Black-Eyed peas when one of the singer's mics failed. If you lip sync, the chance of a failure is minimized. If all an act had to do was stand in pretty much one place and had the luxury of no time limit for an end, it would be easier to play live, but, when you have only twelve or so minutes to play and nail it first time out with all the associated hub-bub of setting up and tearing down so they can get back to the game, you have to live with the fact your dulcet tones will have to rely on Memorex...
