First, your not storing 100% of the energy (realistically speaking, not sure how SH3 models this). Most modern engines are only like 30% efficient to start with, now you add another set of components (batteries and electric motors) to further decrease efficiency.

Secondly, up until the XXI, U-boats were more efficient on the surface, so running submerged to save juice doesn't make sense.

With the range we have, Wilmshaven to Morocco should be no problem runnign at 7-8 knots. I've been very tempted this career to take a stab at New York in my VIIb. Yeah, i'll have to use the cow in Newfoundland in both legs of the trip, but you could probably make it TO new york on one tank, but not much else.

But I'm not sure how the game models efficiency and such though. And if your talking evading detection by running submerged during the day, well that's another story altogether.

If you don't mind long periods at full TC it's feasible to make it to NY in a VIIb. Recent patrol logged roughly 16,000km in one very messed up trip. Went from Kiel -> English Chanel -> AL/AM convoy lanes, kept finding the wrong convoys and being in awful positions when I did (they were always fast convoys going the other direction 300-400km away, in heavy weather. A major fuel burner to try and catch up to) so kept going westward towards Halifax. Wasn't until I was nearly at Halifax that I started to run into convoys that I could get into firing position (largely due to the very heavy seas burning up extra fuel) and finally got my catch. Set course to return to St. Nazaire (left Kiel only a few days before the bases were set to change) at 8 knots and came back into port with maybe 5 or 6 tons left of fuel; 100km out I got the message that "we're out of diesel fuel" and coasted in on fumes (the large sail didn't hurt either :O: )

I think that if you use milkcows you do not messed your career because you can resupplie your u-boat almost like if you docked at port:Fuel+Torpedos+Repair your boat+Rewon+Medals....
The problem is that you have to return to your base to have a new mission.

Well you do it, when you have over 50.000 tonnage, you willn't have 1 lousy medal for you and for your crew, because you docked at a milkcow, when you dock home(depend which harbor you have on the clipboard).. you always have mission briefing, and a decoration for you and for your men...

I have learned my lesion using milkcows to refuel, and rearm, and the next patrol grid is "NULL", that's means no reown points for that grid included the 24 hours patrol points either..

But that's my opinion.. everybody have there own way of playing SHIII...
