Is there a way I can operate the hydrophones myself, or it is al in the hands (and the ears) of the sonarman?

You can indeed use the hydrophone, simply click on it and move the needle around. If you lower your view slightly there is a volume knob which has some three settings - click on the left or right side of the knob to adjust (I think?).

If you have a pair of earphones, plug em in and turn the volume up....you may be suprised to hear some of the sounds.
