Whats that compared to D/L and U/L?

I know its off topic here but a few people were showing their online speed test as was I.

Thanks.

The 'ping' is the latency between you and the server; basically, the time it takes for data to go from one location to the other.

Distance plays a pretty big role in determining ping/latency, but your overall upstream and downstream should stay pretty consistent regardless of location.

A good analogy for an internet connection is a garden hose. Upstream and downstream would be similar to the width of the hose, showing you how much 'water' or data can be passed through it at once. Latency would more or less be related to the speed the water can flow through it, going from one end to the other, and just like a data connection, a longer hose means it's going to take more time to reach it's destination.

For the practicality of UBI's proposed OSP service, ping/latency should be a non-issue, you're not apt to notice a major difference from 10ms to 300ms when connecting to a server. As a sidenote, the same applies for most data transfer; with a large file, you're going to equate "speed" with the amount of data that can be transferred at once (MB/sec) as opposed to the time it takes each packet of information to go from point A to point B.

This is at the off-peak times, from 3pm until about 11pm it is usually struggling to get 23-30kbs (yep, thats kilobytes per second)

No SH5 for little old Yak...

Thanks Neal ! :salute:
I almost forget...
Many Thanks for participating in this thread to "elanaiba" and "GreyOctober"... for they assistance to this community in these dramatic days of WW2... and their precious explanations to "slow" part of community, left behind the "healthy" part of Ubi convoys...

Why is everyone speedtesting to there nearest city???

I very much doubt that ubisoft have a server in every city.... try doing the test to the cities that ubi's servers are located. That would give a more accurate reading of your speed.

Interesting topic to me

Does anyone know how many servers UBI has and where they are?
Thanks

Thanks KlassenT,
This will give me something to study up on as I am interested. And not just because of SHV for I've sent a mental torpedo that way. :haha: Haven't heard a big bang yet, just my luck it was a dud. :arrgh!:

Seriously though thanks a lot, this has helped.

Nothing like living in the capital city of my country. Look at those blistering speeds we get here.

Woo hoo - my ISP just told me they upgraded my line to ADSL2+...now I have the fastest speeds possible...

Well as long as everyone is whipping it out...

By the way. The test says "Start test to recommended server". Whom recommends the server and how do you know who it is?

Nevermind, I saw it to the left of the results and it did indeed use the correct provider.

SabreHawk 04-01-10 05:36 PM

Interesting thread, I hadn't ever tested mine as I never felt a need to given that comcast is pretty well known to be quite fast. But since I was looking, I did anyway. Wow, almost up there with Neal's.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/768830103.png

Although I see what ya'all mean about distance. I tested again to Bucharest and wayyyy different.
