And not what is better or more functional. |

I like the old, rusty and greasy look.
It gives me kinda the Uboot feeling i want. The new isn't bad either, it reminds me to windows 7. But nah, not for an Uboat sim. I guess the modders will do the thing :arrgh!: |
Sir, how extraordinary to have such poll at said time. To enable me to comply with your requsition for opinion, you shall have to wait. I maturely consider this particular poll to be a premature advance. I say no vote, sorry, :O: Good Day.

The Speed Telegraph on SHV sucks. What gives ?
That thing is pure arcade. |
Periscope: NEW. I thought the SH3 periscope view was way too cluttered. The right-offset of SH5's may be adjustable, and all the little extra views can be scaled or even closed (well, that's true of the map at least; the rest I'm not sure about). I like how much larger the view is on the new one.
Crew management: OLD, but... I would prefer to see SH4's crew management screen with an AOD-style damage control. Water flooding in: NEW. Looks much better. Radio log and captain's log: OLD, but... SH4's was far better than SH3's, appearing as a clipboard on the current screen. As for the interface controls, my favorite is SH3's with FLB_Sales's Simfeeling Six-Dials Mod. No interface at all, and the dials are slideouts. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...eve/mymod2.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...eve/mymod3.jpg |
I give, i have placed my lot, thus i stand aside, carry on, do as you must do. :hmmm:

Every time I see something like this I think of Paul Rieser's character in "Aliens". Some suit run amok.
They could have done a better job of using period graphic interfaces. SH3 looked good for its time, but even that could be improved. Not by going all 1990s (because it still looks dated to me) but by reproducing the era better. Besides analoge is cool. And mid century analoge is the coolest! |
With all the excellent Peri\Uzo mods done here and the Ubi devs come up with this.
How sad. All they had to do is ask. And that Speed telegraph is crap. |

I see Rome: Total War's family tree system has been carried over to Silent Hunter 5. I wonder if I will get increased renown by marrying into a family with high standing in the Nazi Party.
More on topic... it's a tad bit late to ask for a new interface when the game is two weeks from release. At least SH5 has taught me how important "immersing" UI's actually are. Always thought it was a bit silly that a game's UI had to match the artistic style of the period (how Age of Empires II had a "wooden" UI, for example), but when I saw and heard SH5's futuristic UI, I realized how important this is to immersion. I get an Assassin's Creed feeling watching the trailers, like I'm arriving from 2500 to take control of a WWII sub. |
To be fair, they changed the interface in SH5 the way it is so that it will allow different aspect ratios for the resolution. Bull hell, that's not an excuse to make them look so ugly. I'm sure they could have kept the old interface from SH3 and separate them in pieces so that they can all clamor together or spread out depending on the interface. And with the new FPS view, wouldn't SH2 style periscope view be easier to implement? (Like This)
And just looking at the basic placement of the UI on periscope view shows how amateurish it is. The scope view is on the right side while torpedo selection is on the top left corner of the screen (along with the periscope depth indication:shifty:). You're obviously not going to use the torpedo selection all that much, but it's just common sense that it's not intuitive to have you view the right side of your screen while you're using the mouse (assuming that you're right-handed) to fiddle with the controls on the left side.:nope: How did they get it right in SH3 but mix it up in here? http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/164...1220115610.jpg :damn: Here's what I did with microsoft paint because I don't have photoshop and no related skills other than copy&paste (few stuff are obviously ported from SH3 because it's so much better): http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/164...1220115610.jpg Much nicer no? I mean things like this are basic stuff. I would even be willing to tolerate the DRM if the game was really good, but this kind of sloppiness is unacceptable. And that's just placements I've been talking about, I didn't even talk about the looks! |
Question:
considering all these cosmetic changes, are the guys working on this the same team or similar team that worked on previous titles? Not sure if that has already been covered...... Just thinking, different team, different input, ideas, etc.... I'm thinking along the lines of: all "art" or creative work has a "signature" or a "recognisable" form, so when viewed, is recognised instantly by viewer and the connection is made to that artist or creator..... |
