The sample size for US deaths is 0. A previously sick Mexican child (who had other health problems) shouldn't count as a US death.

Fair enough. My previous point about the disturbing nature of the disease still stands.

Holy crap. I'm browsing this site tonight, and I see already THREE "swine flu" threads on a single page. There might be more, but I stopped and entered this thread after seeing the third one down below.

Give me a break. The media is all worked up about it, and that's ok. But this hysteria goes to show how much the media is able to really influence the people all over the damn world.
The swine flu is surely bad. But there is no reason for hysteria yet.
Here's a secret: You die anyway. And some of us think this usually is when God calls home. No sooner, no later. A lot of people walked across the street and got run down by a truck, while swine flu had nothing to do with it.

Relax. Only because half the world dies, or the media thinks it does, doesn't mean YOU die. That's not up to the media, nor you, to decide.

No kidding, jeez what a (cough) buncha scaredy (cough-cough!) cats. :-?

I suppose if we have a full-blown pandemic tomorrow, I will be better off because my immune system is currently busy fighting off some bacteria.

Its very simple,
Pigs Now Fly with Birds,
Like the Common Flu,
Give Pigs More Antibiotics,
Plus Birds,
In Feed?
Creates a New Virus,
Passed to Humans with Low Body Protection?
like the Weak?
It will Kill a Person like you and me,
Unless detected early.
This bug is Now in the Air,
As I Work with A Rescue Service,
We are on High Alert,
This is Worldwide,
Making A Joke Of It here Sickens Me,
People Die from this,
Lets Pray a Relative of a member
here does Not :nope:

Most of the regulars know what I do for a living, with that said, the trauma unit nearest to my unit of assignment is on high alert. They had a confirmed case Monday, wasn't confirmed till last night. No one enters the hospital w/out a mask. They admitted 126 people today, 90% with flu-like symptoms. Take it anyway you'd like but use caution out there.

Aramike 04-29-09 11:59 PM

Now the WHO is saying that only 7 deaths are directly attributed to the Swine Flu. http://www.smh.com.au/world/only-7-s...0429-aml1.html

Quite frankly, while this outbreak may be serious it certainly doesn't seem like a pandemic. For one, the odd discrepency in fatality percentages in the US versus Mexico makes little sense and has just seems as though Mexico is using supposed symtoms as verification, rather than hard data.

The other thing to consider is that it doesn't seem to be spreading exponentially fast, as a viral pandemic should. A lot of the reported cases seem to be directly resulting simply from public awareness. There is no doubt that many of the victims who have been tested would have simply stayed home and rested were there no panic involved.

Personally, I think the fear is overrated (knock on wood).

I hope you are right....

Heh, me too. I just get a little skeptical when there are more news stories about a so-called upcoming pandemic than there are confirmed cases. It just seems that the virus would spread faster than the news cycle, as that virus' speed would be what causes the articles to appear in the first place. Instead, its seems that the only thing virulent here is the story.

FIREWALL 04-30-09 12:53 AM

I'm watching the late nite news now.

And their closeing one school after another after haveing even one student with flu like symtoms.
