My computer is too old so I doubt it could handle SH4 so I stay in SH3. But I do like reading what's happening with SH4 to see if I am enticed to buy a new computer. I'm sure I'll do so when SH5 comes out.

I should get my copy of SH3 in a few days. I am always curious about a games predecessor - it tells you a lot about the development team... and also what improvement we might expect in an SH5.

I have both games installed. I haven't played SH3 in about a year though. I find that playing U-Boats without wolfpacks is as pointless as playing SH4 without water. There is no way GWX or God himself can fix it because you would need AI wolfpack buddies with some reasonable behavior to recreate anything close to reality. The only reason SH3 is so popular is the movie "Das Boot" which also was light on wolfpack activity, focusing on life in the boat. This makes players think they are playing something close to reality. They are not. Just the same, I just enjoy the flavor of SH3. The "yesterday's" graphics just fit the game perfectly. Yeah, it's a hokey effect, because the world had just as much detail then as it does now, but just like the newspaper who prints the 1971 color photograph in black and white to make it look old, it works. The only thing that made me buy SH4 was that SH3 kept forgetting my career if I didn't maintain some arcane list of nonsensical rules for saving the game. SH4 has none of those problems.

I'm enjoying the heck out of SH4. But if it didn't exist I'd be enjoying the heck out of SH3, only saving when outside of sight of land, no targets or aircraft in detection range, never when submerged, always facing Mecca, never with a black cat in my lap, while reciting obscure incantations in German.....

You crack me up, RR! A healthy sense of humor if I ever read one...

Hey, I play SH3 and I object to RR's observations. My game doesn't crash when I save in those places, nor do I have to jump through any special hoops!

It does on the other hand crash for no apparent reason, and sometimes those just happen to coincide with the above-mentioned procedures.

But still...:dead:

Actually I never had a problem with the game crashing. It would just forget about my career next time I started the game and I'd have to start over. I lost a couple of careers with 30 or so days of playing time on them and I was slightly miffed. It was fun when stupid me popped up in the SH3 forum asking for help and I got lots of variations of "hey dummy! You should know not to save if you haven't been ritually purified in chocolate today." That's my kind of purification!:D

Before I got the problem straightened out SH4 came out. It just ran great and I never looked back. Actually I have played SH3 missions off and on and they continue to be great fun. I consider the game itself (ignoring the save glitch) equal to SH4 in quality and think it's a shame that Ubi didn't update SH3 to SH4 visual quality rather than add U-Boats to SH4. Then we would have two healthy front-line submarine simulators.
