I tried to raid Scapa Flow like Prien does... a mass of these bloody destroyes, nerving flys so I was submerged and mostly on silent running - if I entered the bay the great regard was: Nothing. I made some fotos through my periscope from that nice town but thats all. Really annoying.
Harbor raids are fine - if they are made in early war. The later the war the harder it is. Handbreit, von Luckner |
I sometimes do it, especially when it comes to ports with little or no defense.:arrgh!:

In my current DiD patrol I raided Longyearbyen (empty) and Barentsburg (ships crashed into harbor facilities due to AI issues), both in Spitzbergen. Now I'm heading for the Whaling port at Jan Mayen to give it a try there...
I'm not too much of a risky guy, so I only raid those lonely outpost harbors with only an armed trawler for defense. Real big, well protected UK harbors? No way! Cheers, AndyW |

I agree with Red Heat - war is war, and with that mindset, and because it was suggested I give it a go ( plus boredom when all I have had for days is empty sea and Bernard doing highland jigs to the gramophone), I decided to give it a try on my last couple of patrols. Hmph. Most harbours I tried, like Malta, seem too well protected by nets and walls. I spent hours sneaking up on Plymouth on my way home, though I don't know why I bothered as no-one seemed to notice me anyway, even though the weather was clear. When I got close enough I found two ships my side of the subnet - both on fire. The ones on the other side of the net did not seem get-at-able, so I gave up on that. Another place looked promising but it was foul weather and impossible to see what was where. Hartlepool did give me one success, but the patrol vessel which I expected to come after me didn't, and nor did anyone else. Finally I tried Dover ( I think), and guess what - someone seems to have beaten me to it again; just smouldering wrecks. Grr. Give up..

In my previous career I raided Gibraltar (twice), Hartlepool, Scapa Flow, Casablanca, some whaling station up north and Portsmouth. Managed to get one cruise liner (44k tons) one Battleship (34k tons ish) and a host of other small craft like cruisers, transports etc... staying undetected was a challenge I liked to set myself, but even if discovered the bumbling fools guarding the ports would usually off themselves with their own depth charges or by driving right into a pier/whatever.
My biggest obstacle in raiding usually seems to be the weather, which has an uncanny habit of turning foggy and horrible as soon as I approach an enemy port. Maybe the allies have developed some secret weather-controlling super weapon... :hmm: For this career I think I'll avoid port raids unless SH3Gen gives me specific orders. I have to go with "shameless exploit". |

Only worth a shizzel if you can launch from 1500 meters and run like Frosty from an Indian summer.

Me too!! |
I avoid harbour raids myself, don't like being in shallow water.

I find the type IIa very good when raiding harbors because of its small size in shallow waters :know:
