you know, I'm the type of Kaptian that I don't care to know how it works, the mechanics, etc. All I'm concerned with is that it works. :D

Once again I am going to have to respectfully disagree. (with 1480) Sonar was once SONAR which means SOund NAvigation and Ranging, whilst ASDIC means Allied Sound (or sonic I can't remember) Detection Investigation Committee although I think I read that no committee with this name actually exsisted.
I realize sonar is colloquially used to refer to any accoustic detection but this uneccessarily muddles the issue here.
From the U.S. Naval dictionary; Bold- (Kriegsmarine) Device used by U-Boats to confuse ASDIC

Note it specifically says asdic which I have never seen confused with hydrophones. There was also a good university article about bubble dynamics in sound refelection and how they will produce an echo but I have to look for it again as I can't remember for the life of me where I found it.

Also, as previously mentioned the Germans did develop a decoy specifically for fooling passive acoustics. There would have been no reason to develop one if BOLD did this.

1- Does it work against active pinging as well as passive?
2- It doesn't work at deeper depths?
3- Does ordering a knuckle turn create the same effect?
4- Why would the destroyer stop instead of charge towards the decoy?
5- How many do you have?
6- Is there any point to using them multiple decoys at the same time to make a bigger disturbance?

Thanks.

I hope your taking all this in :hmm:

You were asking about decoys in RL and not in-game....weren't you

You weren't :o

You mean all this scientifically based opinion has strayed away from what you were asking http://imgcash6.imageshack.us/img231...shockedvi8.gif

Some of the best keyboard admirals have taken the time and effort to give you the benefit of their wisdom on WWII underwater decoys here......pretty confusing eh? ;)

Precisely...
Keep the faith Kaleun.....your answer must come soooooooon. http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...ies/pirate.gif

<must get back to working on the Q Ship mod....not forgetting to count every rivet>

Ok point taken, perhaps 1480 and I will continue this discussion in private message.
That being said, I think he should still get to post a rebuttal.

In my own defense, I must add that my original reply to this post was in in-game context.

Rgr that matey.....just sometimes it can irritate the original poster when questions go unanswered despite the fact many respond.

If somebody starts another thread on the specifics I'd be happy to contribute http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...s/thumbsup.gif

I actually have a very good grasp of physics, and the real-world science of underwater acoustics and sub warfare. Unfortunately, that knowledge doesn't always translate into the game, which is why I'm less concerned with the factual debate and on whether it works in the game or not. But hey, I'm totally in favor of internet debates.

On the plus side, attacking a MASSIVE Torch convoy, I used a few Bold to get away. I used jimbuna's method of running up to flank, dropping the decoy (usually got DC shortly after), then slowing to Slow shortly after the decoy drop (or during the DCing). It took three attempts, but I think what happened is I evaded the first escort after the second decoy, and evaded another escort with my third decoy. Two other escorts were also milling around (the other 4-6 escorts were still with the convoy), and they all just ended up puttering around my last datum point. Too bad a stupid troop transport soaked up the torp I aimed at the escort carrier. December 1942, well over 1,000,000 tons, and no big enemy ships yet! (cruiser & aux. cruiser are my biggest)

So long story short, I'm still more than happy to hear more about specific tactics (what works, and equally if not more important, what DOESN'T work) with decoys. Oh, and the above was done at around 100M depth (between 80-120).

You got over a million in tonnage, and asking about tactics????? :hmm:
Keep doing whatever you have been doing, think of the decoy ( in game terms) as your momentary substitute. Think of it as your loud substitute and then make your boot the opposite of it.

I've seriously got to study the manual. I'm so busy enjoying this sim, I haven't read a thing, but having just had two hours playing cat and mouse with a destroyer, knowing I have decoys is more than handy. :)

There's so much I don't know, yet it's fun finding out, so for now I'm just gonna edge my way through - although I wish I could muster enough renown for a deck gun at least and someone who can load Torpedo's with a little enthusiasm, and within say an hour of being stalked with empty tubes. Failing that someone should make a "Throw that idiot over the side!" Mod. :):)

Once again guys, and not for the last time, I thank you.:up::up:
