Are you saying sir that honest criticism is not allowed?

There are quite a few of us that find the content of this addon to be quite, well, unbelievable, in light of the rather unfinished state of SH4. You would have to agree that the Pacific War, as portrayed in SH4 is incomplete and that many details are indeed incorrect. While the modding community has gone a long way to address some of these faults, many are hard coded, and can only be rectified by the developers, but instead we get a U Boat type that never put to sea.

I would hope that you can see our frustration.

Incomplete? Unbelievable?
My god man, ...your men have super powers... and there's nothing 'cooler' than sailing around the Indian Ocean in a Walter boat with super human Germans.

I jest, in part.

However, how about we save the critiques of a product most of us haven't played yet until after we have it?

I think it's true that from the perspective of some (in fact many) of the purely sim players, the priorities on development of the add-on might seem a little odd. My hope, though, is that for all the features it introduces to draw in new players, what it has under the hood will be very good for us in the long run.

Otherwise let's keep realistic here, too. Sure they got many aspects of the war wrong. But I don't think there's ever been a sim on the market that got them more right, and at the same time offered the features and graphics that SH4 does. I think some of us are basically a little bit spoiled, when we shouldn't be. The modding community treats us too good, but we forget where the games actually start...

Personally, however this one comes out (and there's really no chance they can totally blow it), it's a little special. I can't hide my enthusiasm for taking a U-boat out on the ocean and trying out the cool new features. If it turns out a little gamey, I'll try to like it for what it is and wait for the modders to swoop in for my purist needs.

The real question here - is it worth 10 bucks? Since I bet most of us here make a lot more than that in one hour on their job, what are the chances it's not?
I'll tell you what I think when I get it. But honestly, I just don't see how it could not be.
Likewise, even if you spent $50 or more on SH4, unless you've worked your butt off modding it instead of playing it (and we got those types) - you've probably got more play value out of it than what you paid for! So I'd like to keep a positive tone here until there's enough reason to get negative.

You're right to be a little frustrated at the state of SH4, but that is exactly what they did with SH3 too. They left the modders with a misshapen ball of clay, and the male modders made it really, really, ridiculously good-looking.

This is obviously not the way it should happen, but it is the way that it does.

Of course you may be right as I haven't known any female SHIII modders either, but...

To me this expansion feels like what SH4 should have been from the start..and i must say i quite enjoy it :D plus the extra features are cool, it almost feels like this was the game they intended but rushed SH4 out the door..

the only problem i had was the american voices for german crew..but all i had to do was copy the german voices from the SH4 patch over to this and its almost perfect(when the repair report came in he sounded american again :p )

most of the mods i used that worked for stock SH4 seem to work for this except i havnt tried RFB, and i know i will get blasted for saying this but i really prefer the game without all the ROW mods etc..
i previously used every ROW mod plus the pacific add on but i think they did a pretty good job this time..infact the sunrise when i was playing just before looked much better just had to get a few mods for the bow spray and limber holes and it looks great

i would really like to make the wake from my sub about 50% more transparent becasue it looks far too bright to me..it might just be my vid cards or screen settings but everything else looks perfect...my wakes look like bright white cardboard cut outs..

I wrote misshapen ball of clay and from then just couldn't resist paraphrasing Zoolander... so

Don't be frustrated! From what Dan posted, there have been some significant changes done to the guts of SH4 in version 1.5 that will allow expansion, ships, campaign layers, plus streamlining the load process.

Modding will take care of the rest!

Its all good. Regardless of whether you like the U-Boats or not, SH4 is going to move forward. Time to have fun! I know I have fun every time I fire it up!

Happy Hunting!

This add-on appears to be a disappointment, no? I was hoping that they would've expanded on the Pacific scenario.

ReM 02-29-08 04:27 AM

I LOVE U-boats and have really never given SHIV a fair chance because I prefer the Atlantic theatre.

I am willing to buy this add-on, but not for the U-boats, but because of the improvements made to SH IV, something like a 1.5 mod.

Is it worth spending the money if you regard it as mostly a patch or are there only slight changes made to the overall gameplay of SHIV?

Any insight would be appreciated.....
