I'm sorry, but, who, precisely, gives a crap about character customization? Is it really such a big demographic? Because I couldn't care less about what the guy looks like and would much prefer to see, gee, innovative gameplay instead? An environment that re-acts to you? Though if I could be a gangster in a wheelchair and with only one arm, that might be interesting. :hmm:

Pio was reporting on everything significant there. The "customization" genre is actually huge. From Guild Wars to Oblivion; millions of players play these games (2nd Life for example) specifically for the customization features.
Does it relate to Subsims? Not yet. But I note that nearly EVERYONE got fired up about 3d animated characters in SH3 and SH4. While multiplayer is a big draw, how many out there wish they could make their "Kapitan" character look like a stylized, hollywood version of themselves or a favorite RL Captain?
As for innovative gameplay; try 100 square miles of city with no rules and a fully interactive environment. Play for the law or for the criminal element. Perma death, incarceration. These little tidbits that they let out are just the tip of the 31M they spent on it.
As for innovative gameplay, most of this community aren't interested in that either...
We're assigning you the reporting job from the Paris GDC. You go on your own dime (like Pio) and don't forget to make it at least as interesting as Pio's...good luck.
