lol damn it, now you've got me wanting to buy another model!

But I have no space at my current flat to do so.

Not to mention I still have a Chevy Lumina (which I'm basing on Tom Cruise's car in 'Days of thunder') and a 1/350th scale Yamato to finish!

How new is the 1/72nd kit? as I havn't seen it here down under :arrgh!:

Hi, my brother gave me this kit several months ago, my son is helping me with it, he a perfectionist and his kits are awsome, but as you can see, we have a way to go yet:

Probably a year or so before it's finished!:yep:

The VIIC kit has been around awhile... I bought mine a year and a half ago... and it had been around awhile when I bought it! This particular kit you don't see too often in hobby shops. I had to order mine. The 1/72 Gato is a more recent model.

There are two versions of it, an early war VIIC/B and a later war VIIC/41 with snorkel and atlantik bow.

Revell AG/Germany 1/72 U-Boat Type VIIC U552

Revell AG/Germany 1/72 U-Boat Type VIIC/41 Atlantic Version

When I bought mine, the VIIC U552 was actually more expensive than the VIIC/41 ($60.99 vs. $48.99 US). I see now they've adjusted the price and both are selling for $58.99 US, so I guess now it's just a matter of taste.

Revell AG/Germany 1/72 Gato Class Submarine
I don't particularly understand why the Gato is more expensive ($74.99 US) newer maybe?

Not cheap, but the best way to give that completed model a 'professional' finish :yep:

Tis not too bad
The torp loading is £15.95

Czechmaster do a torp loading kit too with PE plus 3 crewmembers
Only 5.70 plus vat

Not sure what the PE looks like though

Czechmaster do a lot of 1/72 stuff
Mines
Harbour cranes
Harbour personnel

All you need for that diarama

AND

If you fancy a bit of a challange
Turn your VIIC into a VIID
Or do a second
LMAO

Special Navy 1/72 Type VIID U-Boat Minelayer Conversion Set(Reference #SN72005)
This set enables the construction of the minelayer version, the Type VIID, which differed by having a longer hull fitted with five mine tubes carrying five mines per tube. This is a highly attractive version with distinctive differences in shape. The conversion set contains injected hull and deck parts, a resin-cast mine compartment, photo-etched parts and decals for three different Kriegsmarine Type VIIDs. Designed to be used with the Revell Type VIIC kit (NOT the "Atlantic" version).

Price: £12.98 (Excluding: VAT at 17.5%)

Warning to people thinking of buying the Revell in 125 scale-its a old form and has lots of faults when constructed.
If the scale 1-72 is to big for your accomodation - check the new release from Revell - 1-144 D wersion and i believe they are ready to release the shorter B variant in the same scale / both sporting same excellent detail , and you can get the photo etched parts for both now/

As to the U-99 in 1-125 i just finished the model and sunk it in my tank waiting for the algae to do its dirty bussiness on it :yep:
Thats the only good think to do as the detail is poor.

The 1-72 still graces the top of my attic in wait for photo etched parts , and crew from Hannants:

Skookum - try to drill the flood holes in the hull - it greatly improoves any model as you can see from pics below on the stock Revell 1-125 , and drilled .

...and after.

Good luck with the project.

Here's an update:

I've been painting as I go which means the boat has been coming together slowly but surlely. I've been using brushes so far with thick coats in order to give the surface some texture (like corroding steel with fresh paint over top) so it looks a little rough right now. The real tedious part was hollowing our the drainage holes in the hull. I didn't have a drill bit small enough to drill them out, so I took an X-acto knive and carved each one out by hand. Sure glad that part's over with:o:x:doh::doh::doh:

Here are some pics. The conning tower is nearly done. It's just sitting on the deck without glue, and the deck in turn is sitting on the hull without glue.
