Too bad it's so far east in OK, driving to OK City would be a bit of a hump with 2 little kids as it is. If it was in western OK I'd go in a heartbeat.

shoot-kill-win 06-04-07 05:44 PM

I understand, I live in Colorado and my grandparents live in Oklahoma so I have to sit in a car for 12 hours to get down there

tater 06-04-07 05:47 PM

Yeah, OK City is 10 hours from here, and I drive kinda fast.

That is an understatement if I ever heard one. Memorial day for kids these days means the pool is open and the 4th means hot dogs/fireworks. Not much else for most folks other than a day off from work. All you can do is attempt to get them interested. My two girls (9 and 12) want to spend their Saturday mornings on the USS Torsk helping where they can. If they lose interest at least I can say I tried! All you can do is introduce them to it and hope it catches on.

Yea I know, I just did an opinion thing for my AP (college class in high school)language and composition class and I did it on memorial day, I found a political cartoon, with two soldiers on the beach, and a family saying "When your done mind if we BBQ in your spot". There is actually a girl in my school who thought the statue of the marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima was the moon landing.

Another cool piece of info is that the Batfish just got a torpedo in her forward torpedo room, I have not seen it yet but the park manager said it brings a much greater "feel" to being in the sub.

AVGWarhawk 06-06-07 06:19 AM

Thats great Shoot! The Torsk got one about 6 months ago. A museum did not want it anymore. Perfect shape also! She now as two steamers and one electric in the aft torp room. Are you close enought to volunteer a few hours on the weekend to keep up the Batfish?

shoot-kill-win 06-06-07 10:47 PM

This summer I will be volunteering the entire time I am down in Oklahoma because I spend summers in Oklahoma visiting my grandparents, so most of my time will be spent helping to keep the Batfish in top shape. I live in Colorado so I am not able to do it all the time, but when I can help out I certainly will because she is not near in as great condition as the Cod, the Pampanito, or the Torsk.

Good for you Shoot! I did my first day last week on the Torsk and I had one hell of a good time. It felt good to be a part.

I'm not surprised to hear that. I employ quite a few teenagers here to fuel some of this country's commercial aircraft and I find they have little regard for how safe they perform thier job. However, "shoot-kill-win," it sounds like you have your priorities arranged. Keep up the good work and stay focused.

I wonder who all is going to try and make this, I am contemplating it, being about fiveish hours away or so.

I've been meaning to go forever, and just haven't done it, mainly because something always comes up.

 man, I stink.

Then just go, you only live once. My wife is agreeable to just about anything. I guess I will keep her another week.;)
