Oddly enough, apparently John Carpenter wrote the character of Snake Plissken with Clint Eastwood in mind, but being a low budget-ish production, that was never really an option for the movie.
For a fun movie, the 'Escape from' titles are much more up my street than Rambo, at least you know the director is not trying to take himself too seriously and the thing is basically a live-action cartoon, whereas Rambo is also totally preposterous, but with pretentions to being something more than it really is.
God knows how bad/good the remake will be, but I suspect without Kurt Russell it will be pretty poor and closer to Rambo than the originals were.
With regard to the Snake Plissken character, being a glider pilot, I like a hero that flies one en-route to his mission, although it's kind of sad to watch Escape from New York these days seeing the World Trade Center in it.
