http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=94737 and I think it shows how people at Ubisoft think about complexed PC games. |
I vote for someone other than ubisoft making a game, because all you get is a game not what it could be,and unfinished and not enough patches(sh3)....To many 3rd world games developed, and very poor quilty....
|
My impression is that most game publishers want to move their games in directions that make it "more accessible to newcomers" or "catering to the casual gamer" ie dumbed down and simple. Even paradox games get simpler and simpler in every new instalment...

I know there is already an SH4 mod in the works, but I would love to see Ubi do a modern sub sim for their next title. Sure, Dangerous Waters is nice, but I think you could do a lot more with such a title, especially if it incorporates some sort of dynamic campaign as you have in the SH series. To be able to play through an entire war ( I guess it would have to be World War III) would be great fun.
My second choice would be a sim of warfare in the Age of Sail. Empires: Total War is promising some interesting battles in that regard, but I doubt it will come anywhere close to a true sim in the vein of SH. It would be fun to be able to captain a man of war and direct boarding actions and what-have-you in the style of Master and Commander. |
To me, one of the downsides of most surface ship simulators is that (and this is by no means unrealistic) they concentrate on groups of ships battling it out. You're an admiral, not a captain. This, to me, negates the fun of taking MY BOAT (or ship) out to face the enemy, tweaking her between patrols, etc.
Thats said, I've always wanted to captain a virtual DD. |
And that was the beauty of Destroyer Command. You skippered a single destroyer through a progressive career, from escorting a single tanker to a friendly harbor to being part of a task group fighting in the Pacific or Atlantic. At one point someone was working on making a career just driving a Flower, escorting convoys back and forth across the Atlantic.
The other great part was the SH2-DC multiplay, with up to four of each in a variety of battles. That was also being modded, with the possibility of British vs German destroyer, cruiser and even battleship fights, all with one player running one ship. Loads of fun. |
well, if we had some really ballin' modders for the source engine....we could do it...
yeah if you can dream it you can do it on source...ok well you can do a lot it has vehicle support so i bet making a ship for it would not be too hard. although i don't know if you can sim flooding/bouyancy in it... |
Enigma Rising Tide always reminds me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T867TAzANmg

Please devote countless hours of developers time and countless amounts of cash to produce a surface combat sim. Then feel free to visit the user forums to view all the posts of discontent. Some sales pitch that.:p |

Ubi would definately be fine. |
In case you don't already know about Storm Eagle Studios and their upcoming title "Jutland". http://www.stormeaglestudios.com/public/home.html

The SH4 modding shouldn't be hard, as the engine for the surface destroyers is already there. I have played multiplayer, and although buggy as hell, controlling the DD is quite fun, when it works right.
