WRONG you dont need manual targeting for "realism"
realism is alot of other stuff than just manual targeting

I will not in any way clean the sh*t house that job is for Bernard as long as he dose not fall in and block the toilet. I like to spin the wheel on realism and where it lands I shall play it.

I got at the moment 23 careers ranging from 3% to 100%

Im not an uber realism nut, to Kumando who says where is the fun in auto targeting, I say, there is lots of fun, it takes an enormous amount of pressure off you the player giving you more time to actually do what the whole point of the game is, sink ships. I didn't get into silent hunter just to twiddle dials on a HUD. I got into it because I wanted to be the captain, and I wanted to experience WW2 in an enjoyable situation.

If you think manual targeting is just twiddle dials you dont really have a clue of what you are talking about, you should try manual targeting first before you even say that auto target is fun.

No need to be rude to the lady.

Such disgraceful manners.:nope:

But I myself played a long while on Auto TDC. But in the end while auto was fun, manual is exhilerating! Getting all that correct, AND sailing the boat, AND keeping track of your postion, AND judging your next move, and then getting that hit... its beautiful. The most satisfying game I've ever played. The rush of serotonin is unparalleled.

I keep weapons officer. and external camera for screenies. Yep--Kiel 1939 is best start. You get the onward to victory feeling in this great naval base! :D

didnt say you NEED it for realism just simply that you SHOULD try it out for a taste of what it was really like to have to spend 5 minutes figuring out how your going to hit the target.

im supporting the fact that SH3 is scalable to incorporate a multitude of gameplay styles - not bashing it.

as for the "might as well play with a game pad" comment.

there is some truth to that IMHO... what fun or challenge could possibly be found in crosshairing a ship and just shooting to get a magical hit one ship after another sinking or damaging 5 ships in a matter of seconds NOTHING at all wrong with doing it that way - its too easy and just doesnt suit ME. i dont speak for everyone. thats what i like about SH3 - its for everyone.

im just stating that my opinion is if you dont at least TRY manual targeting at least once you might as well play this http://www.funflashgames.com/subcommander.htm hahaha :rotfl:

I forgot to mention my set up. I run with everything checked except for external cam, because I love the views in harbour and at sunset.

Though next patrol I think that I'll go absolute 100%. Just because its hard not to be tempted to watch a DD.

I was about to ask something, but you might of answered it for me. IF ITS TRUE I WILL BE HAPPY!!

I want to start a career with almost max settings for realism, but incase I don't like not having ext. view, can I turn it on for the NEXT patrol? or do I have to start all the way over again?
THANKS

I play at 80% and I don't give a stuff if your game's auto or manual target set, as long as you're enjoying it;)

Indeed, manual targeting is not easy. But before speaking about tdc, bearing, Aob...You will first need to improve your navigation! Try to anticipate your target path, be really careful to get a good position, not being detected...It's not just only about choosing on/off weapons officer.

Get a manual solution is not difficult, it's the last moment of a long-time action. If you (the captain! not the weapon officer...) made your job right first!
I mean you can be 2500meters far, aob 140, your weapon officer would say 'ok no problem i have got a solution!'. In manual targeting you will NEVER get the risk to shot a torpedo in such conditions.
It's the hunt which is interesting, not pulling the trigger!

Even if you get only 1 ship in your patrol, you will be very proud of you!

I play 100%, no map contact update

80 percent:D
Loaded GWX 103 Last night no Problems :D using SH3 Commander.
Sure would like to get rid of this IIA Boat. was on patrol 4 found a British Merchant hit it twice with Torp's and just keep on going. Lost it in the dark used my 6 torps up and when home. The guys have 4 patrols and ready for Patrol 5 time Nov 17 39 going back to same area and see if we get lucky. Patrol the AN 34,35,36 area's Channel South Norway coast.

I started Sh3 with Weapons Officer and auto targeting, then moved onto WO and manual targeting and then manual targeting and no WO. I went back at one stage to full assistance just for fun and ended up quitting that career cos I had the Knights Cross with swords and diamonds by April 1940 and it just felt wrong. I sank 4 ships in a convoy in one bow attack courtesy of my WO, right under the smoke stack every time, whereas in manual I prob would have got a damage on one or possibly two due to the time it takes to get ranges, errors in range and forgetting to open the tube:D Each to their own though. It is a game and should be played for enjoyment:yep:
