This painting shows Otto Kretschmer's U23 in November 1939. Two magnetic mines have just been fired from the bow torpedo tubes hoping to snare unaware Allied ships.

I know this is a painting, but I could not resist. The caption and painting come from this site:

the first 206 picture looks like it was here in Florida's Lake Apopka. You'll melt in 15 minutes in that lake...



And just what is that big buldge on the bow of the 206? Sonar?

My guess is its a collins class - just the shape of the conning tower, and the little extra bit on the back of it..

I understand that its a directional sonar mount, similar to a narrow-band radar in the fact you are able to focus on a particular bearing, down to only a few degrees.

This is based on what a mate of mine in the navy told me, and for all i know it could be completely and utterly false, but i'll happily stand corrected!
