Would be nice if SHIV was built to utilize a dual core cpu.. anyone know if that is in the works?

I wonder Tool, You say you have 1 gig of dual channel. So then you must have 1 pair of 512 sticks?

If you are gona upgrade to 2 gig i suggest you get rid of thos 2 512 sticks and buy 2 new 1 gig sticks instead.

Ive had major problem whit dual channel when i tryed to use some older sticks i had whit some new, even if they where same brand. Its more difficult for a computer to handle 4 512 sticks than it is for 2 1024 sticks.
Its very sensitive to get dual channel to work correctly.

Whit thos 4 512, (same brand) The computer refused to start whit that configuration.

If i wanted it to work whit 4 sticks i had to have 4 sticks that was more or less manufactured same day and from same batch.

But some motherboard are more sensitive than others.

I'm confused....was the girl your girlfriend,wife, or daughter?

anyway, 2GB RAM is a real treat to have. belive me: I know.....

Just for the record, I'm playing on a 3ghz processor with 1.5 gigs RAM and an Nvidia 6800GT OC

Game runs perfectly. I dont have resolution up to 1600 (never downloaded the software to make it happen) but it runs perfectly with all setting maxed out. I'll upgrade to 2 gigs RAM at some point, but for now its smooth sailing

Download SiS Sandra 2007. It will tell you everything about your system, including the maximum memory capacity of your MB.

Wow 1.5 minute load times on SH3.

Think I know where my tax return money is going!

This is a good site

Run the Scan my computer and it will give you your max memory allowed as well as what you have installed

In always thought only the most recent PC's could make use of more than 1GB of RAM, but Crucial (Thanks for the link) says my motherboard can handle up to 3GB :arrgh!: If it really improves performance I may have to buy some more, I can't stand these long loading times with GWX

AVH, that's one XO/Warden/Betterhalf to hang on to. I wish I was that lucky. I have to fight to get upgrades... and a whooole lot of other stuff too. ;)

AVH and Dallass, Curcial also says that matched stick pairs are the best to use. ;)

More RAM you have the faster will your computer be.

Windows have never been good to fully use all RAM. Instead it create a temporary file on your hard drive that is called virtual memory.
So instead of using your ram it write a temporay file/files to your harddrive and that will slow down your computer a lot if you have a slow HD when its gona read and write to it.

But if you increase your ram then windows have more space of ram to use before it use that virtual memory. So if you have tons of ram the virtual memory wont kick in so fast. There is a quite difference whit memory at 400+MhZ speed than a slow HD at 66-133 MhZ speed.

And if you have more than 2 gig ram you can allways disable the virtual memory from windows but that require more knowleadge and i wont explain how it works.
There is some danger to disable it also.

Not a good idea to disable virtual memory. This debate has been going on for ages. If you disable virutal memory if an app requests memory from the OS then doesn't do anything with it then that memory is wasted. If you have virtual memory enabled then windows is smart enough to realise that the memory is better off used by another app (or by the disk cache) so it pages out that memory and lets something else have it.

Your computer *will* seem more responsive without virtual memory, but if you run out of physical ram, apps will crash. I have 2gb ram, and SH3 (with GWX) usually gobbles up 1-1.5gb of ram. I don't bother closing down browsers, email etc before starting SH3, and my wife is usually logged in as well (via fast user switching). My system uses a lot of virtual memory...

Windows can sometimes page stuff out to virtual memory a bit early for my liking which is a bit annoying (XP may well be tuned for way less than 2gb memory, 2gb was unheard of when xp came out.. 6 years ago) but overall its not too bad.

Don't worry about it reporting a lot of "free" memory. Its not that stupid, the free memory is used for a disk cache, and what ends up happening is the most used bits of the virutal memory pagefile are always in the disk cache.

I showed my XO all of your nice comments. Made her blush. :D

Then I said, "Gee sweety, just think what they'd all say if I got that $499 video card too!"

I'm still rubbin' the bump on me noggin. ;)

Stop making us jelous!!:shifty: I hope you treat her right! Take her out for dinner, do something she likes (even if you don't like it, just don't say it!)

You never know when you need the chps to fall your way in the future!

FIREWALL 01-23-07 12:04 AM

I won't ask what you paid for 2 gigs of ram
But when she's a girlfreind it's Firstmate.
When it's a wife it's an ........ADMIRAL

and don't you ever forget it. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
