This mod sounds fantastic. But I think I will wait for more testing and feedback before I use it with GWX. I certainly appreciate your work as well as the rest of the productive community's efforts.

What's your problem? I use them both.

Hi nvdrifter

I tested your Lite Version 1.31 with GWX for 15 Enemy travels(Feindfahrten).

Here a little story of my campaign end with your mod:;)

At the End of 1942 i was sunk by a Destroyer after a hard and excitingly fight. A deep charge hit me by a crash dive at a deep of 30 meter. My sonar room was heavily damaged and some other things.:)
The water was 60 Meter deep and i must search for deeper Water to escape. The water in my sonar room rises and rises. 6 Destroyer behind me. Later, i was in deeper water at a deep of 187 meter. After a silent run all Destroyers are gone, but my u-boat had to many water in the sonar room. My silent hunter sinks to ground. At a ground deep of 205 meter i start again the repair. One Destoyer was about me with 0 Kn. I donīt hear him at my hydrophone. I start the repair and the Destroyer find me. I start to blow on my ship. At a deep of 198 sinks my ship again to ground. What a ****.:) After repeated depth charge attacks my boat was lost.

Your mod make the depth charge pursuit very excitingly.
I think your work is a great thing for GWX. The repair time is very long and that is good. The flooding time is very good. I think, that the sudden death of devices are
too rarely.

I use this Mod with SH3 Commander 2.7R, and I am having no trouble with it either. Here is my funny story: Using GWX, and it is September, 1940 in a Type VIIB just west of Spain.

First I recieved a radio transmission from another boat claiming that they had to report back to port due to damage received from a ship they sunk. I think the report actually said they collided with the ship. I thought to myself, how in the world could you collide with a ship you actually sunk. That radio report just sounds unrealistic, and a little on the dumb side. I am not making this up, this radio transmission was actually sent to me on this actual patrol. Here is the rest of the story.

I ran into a convoy in extremely bad weather and heavy fog during the black of night. I couldn't see but about 500 meters in front of me if that. I couldn't see the convoy approaching, so I was positioning the convoy off of my 270 degrees waiting on the convoy to role over me so to speak. I had the destoyer escorts lined up perfectly for me to enter into the convoy without them noticing, all using my hydrophone of course. I then start seeing dark objects rolling through, and I start picking the big ones.

Well, to make a long story short, I bag two Medium Merchants, and put two torpedos into a huge Whale Boat. When I shot at the Whale Boat, I was at about 300 meters from the ship. I had emptied all of my loaded torps at this point, so I crash dived to about 160 meters, turn to the same heading as the convoy, and go to silent running at about 2 knots. I sure would like to see what happens to that Whale Boat, so I go to external camera view and watch it for several minutes as it lists from side to side sinking further into the sea, but it still has quite a bit of forward motion.

Well, any way, it finally starts to sink after several minutes. So, I watch it slowly slip under the heavy seas, and then start to follow it all the way down as it starts to pick up speed as it falls. Then, way down below it, I start to pick up an image of something long and narrow. I look a little closer, and I notice that this object is sure enough a UBoat directly beneath this huge ship screaming down. I thought, THAT IS ME!!!!!!!!!!! That huge Whale Boat screamed directly by my UBoat within inches (you couldn't see any gap between the two ships as it went by). I was ducking in my seat wondering what in the world would happen if that thing fell right on top of me, I mean come on, an entire ocean and this thing falls right on top of me. What are the chances. I couldn't beleive it, especially since both my Uboat and that ship had been moving for at least 10 minutes before it actually sunk.

I didn't get off undamaged, but I did get off luckily. The hull of the ship missed me, but I got wacked pretty hard by the ships cranes and rigging right in the middle of my boat. It actually spun my boat completely on its side as it went by. Wow, that was really scary to see.

This mod gave my boat a realistic amount of flooding, and in the correct locations of where they ship hit me. I had some flooding in the engine room, and the rear quarter room, and some control room damaged equipment. It took a long time to repair this stuff too (at least 3 days). The damage was enough for me to head home early myself.

Does anyone know how I can send my own radio report to Bdu about how I hit a ship that I actually sunk, and I now have to report back to base? Unbeleivable!!!!!!!

Hi Preuss. Thanks for that great story. I am happy that people are enjoying LRT v1.31. One of the goals of LRT was to make the instant death screen less common. And also to make some repairs take so long that it would sometimes be easier to abort back to base than try and attempt repairs at sea (as it was in real life).

I will probably be releasing yet another version of LRT sometime in January.

Hocking, that was an intense story. :o The instant flood death screen always bothered my in vanilla SH3. At least with longer flooding times, we now have more time to think about dying. :p

What, may I ask, will be in the next version?:hmm:

Lanzfeld, the next version will make aircaft attacks much deadlier. I still feel that aircaft are not quite deadly enough (from all the U-boat history books I have read). The next version of LRT will aircaft increase bomb damage, aircaft gun damage and aircraft ai skill levels. I am really trying to convey the deadliness of aircaft in the next version. I am hoping players will fear enemy aircraft more than enemy escorts in the next version of LRT. It just won't be worth it anymore to try and fight it out with aircaft on the surface. Will be much wiser to just dive and avoid death from the air. Also, I am considering making batteries a little bit tougher (still not sure about this, though).

I believe that Allied aircaft sunk the highest percentage of U-boats in WW2, so that is why I am making these changes to aircraft. Even though GWX makes aircaft deadlier, I feel it is still too easy to survive aircraft attacks when playing GWX with LRT installed, because U-boats are tougher in LRT (although repair times take much, much longer now). In LRT v1.31, it is possible to survive aircaft attacks, then submerge and make long repairs. But with v1.32, one direct bomb hit will be enough to seriously damage or even disable the U-boat. I am thinking this will be more realistic. But of course, gameplay in GWX with LRT v1.32 will be extremely hard. Even for a highly cautious U-boat captain, death will likely come sooner or later (as it really was). ;)

hocking 12-30-06 10:49 PM

That sounds interesting nvdrifter. I am currently reading Clay Blair's first U-Boat book, "Hitlers U-Boat War: The Hunters, 1939-1942". According to him, and especially in the later years of the war, aircraft were more deadly than destroyers on a case by case basis. I would be interested in trying your next version mod out. I already am in the habit of diving on the first sight of aircraft, so your mod will probably make this habit even more essential.

By the way, when you have flooding in a certain compartment, should you empty that compartment out of men, and just assign the damage crew to work in that area? I thought if you leave people in a damaged compartment, they will actually help make repairs in that compartment along with the damage crew. A few patrols back I had flooding in a certain compartment, and several of the men in this compartment eventually died. The damage crew working in this compartment did not however.

Hi Hocking. I have both volumes of Clay Blair's "Hitler's U-Boat War". Really detailed and well written.

Besides the repair team, I always put as many men as possible into the compartment when repairing heavily damaged equipment, because it does shorten the repair times somewhat (except for crew compartments).

hocking 12-31-06 05:10 AM

Thanks for the info Nvdrifter.

I plan on getting Clay Blair's second book, "Hitlers UBoat War: The Hunted, 1942-1945" after I finish reading the first one. I am only about 150 pages into the first book, and I am amazed to the fact he pretty much covers every single U-Boat that was used in WWII. Very good book so far.

This is not JSGME loadable, is it?

Well, it is. But It might overwrite other parts of other mods. But if you have only GWX installed, the overwrite prompts are ok. LRT was designed to work with GWX. See the LRT readme file for changes made to GWX.
