a) Light cruiser Nürnberg arrived at Kiel; Torpedo Boats Jaguar and Greif, and Z4 Richard Beitzen had escorted her to Kiel from Norway. Later that day, Jaguar, Greif, and Möwe escorted minelayers out of Kiel for the North Sea.
b) Royal Navy began bombarding Pantelleria Island near Sicily.

k) Report on enemy a/c A/S activity:
1) On 28 April, U 504 (Kptlt. Wilhelm Luis) was attacked by aircraft without previous radar location in BF 49 after a suspicious looking trawler group had passed. The boat presumes cooperation. Also, U 437 (Oblt. Hermann Lamby) was heavily bombed during the night in BF 7281 (outbound). The boat was temporarily out of control and submerging was restricted. Help was urgently needed and all boats in the vicinity were ordered to proceed at high speed to the area to render assistance. Destroyer and fighter protection was also requested.
Today, U 415 (Oblt. Kurt Neide) was bombed 3 times by a plane in BF 74 while homeward bound. Despite much damage she was still able to dive. Boat has requested escort from outer point "KERN".
During the period November 1942 to January 1943 enemy a/c A/S activity had little result, but since February its effect has increased to an alarming extent. It is not known whether this is due to improved location gear or to the use of more suitable types of a/c. The fact is that during the last two months there have been more U-boat sighting by English aircraft, and more U-boats have been attacked.
The night attacks repeatedly reported recently make it necessary for the boats in the Biscay area to be given permission to proceed on the surface during the day only to recharge batteries, and submerged at night.
Every effort is being made to produce apparatus able to intercept the radar equipment presumably used by the enemy.
2) G.O.C. Atlantic Air Forces gives the following information on English air operations in his Reg. No. Most Secret 853/43:
"Average sortie of enemy sea reconnaissance during the last 3 months was 35 - 40 planes daily from the following bases:
- Beaulieu (near Southampton) - unknown number of Halifaxes and Liberators
- Talbenny (near Milford Haven) - 23 Beaufighters
- Chivenor (Cornwall) - 36 Whitleys and Wellingtons
- St. Eval, Trevose Head - 73 Wellingtons
- Mount Batten - 14 Sunderlands
- Pembroke Dock - 12 Sunderlands
- Poole - 12 Sunderlands
Concentration by day W. of 10° W, by night in inner Biscay. Largest number of aircraft during the afternoon. When convoys were sailing N. and S. between Gibraltar and England reconnaissance was reinforced to about 50 aircraft daily. English reconnaissance aircraft keep radio silence S. of 49° N., so that it is not possible to discover in what areas they are concentrating.
Ther is no particular increase in activity observed during the last few weeks."
3) It should be noted here that when convoys are going through it is almost impossible for U-boats to operate on the surface owing to constant air activity.
Experience shows that aircraft A/S activity increases when there are a number of U-boats on return passage through Biscay after major convoy operations. Action by Ju 88's type C6, available to G.O.C. Atlantic Air Forces, against A/S aircraft is possible only to a restricted extent.
4) G.O.C. Atlantic Air Forces states in his Reg. No. 853/43, para. 4):
"The Ju 88 C6 is inferior to the Beaufighter (a further 2 Ju88's lost on 22 on U-boat escort off the Spanish coast) and no longer superior to modern A/S aircraft Boeings and Fortress II. Reasons: too slow, unsuitable armament, water-cooled engines sensitive to gunfire".
5) It is clear from G.O.C. Atlantic Air Forces' report that no improvement can be expected in the near future in countermeasures to the ever increasing enemy aircraft anti-submarine hunts, which are now making themselves felt immediately off our own bases. There will be further losses.

Cmdr.: When we arrived in Bordeuax 3 weeks ago, the escort path was patrolled by Bf110's.

OKW-Report: British troops withdraw from Buthidaung, Burma; Allied naval forces have begun the Operation Retribution blockade, sealing off Tunisia from the sea; German television began broadcasting from studios in Paris.

Cmdr.: U 465, 439, 332 have not yet reported since they left Western France. Several challenges received no reply. Their loss must be assumed during the last few days in April when air patrolling was very strong. On 28.4. U 439 and 332 were detailed to assist U 437, who had been damaged. They did not reply to this order either, although they must have been in the vicinity.
Search planes sent out did not find U 663, although considering the prevailing sea force this was not extraordinary. No reports were received from the boats detailed to assist. So far, U 663 has not replied to control. She can use only her emergency transmitter and probably cannot get through during heavy weather (antenna awash).

Considering all this, we have been able to transit the Bay of Biscay relativly unscathed.

1723 - At A-20, Sound contact warship bearing 328°, E=14000, on course NW. Seems to be too far from the position of the last contact at noon, to be the same escort group.

1729 - Reception Depth.

1737 - S-Tiefe. U Class Destroyer bearing 330° on search pattern, E=7500. Anything further cannot be seen due to the high swell and the destroyer is too close to be able to surface.

1741 - Boat turning to course 321°.

1748 - The destroyer runs off at high sped on course West.

1757 - Surfaced after 1h and 3.1nm.
Escort Carrier sighted bearing 323°, on course 323°. Boat changing course to 304° and A.K.

1815 - Qu.1752CG bottom left - Boat is attacked by carrier-based A/C with machine guns and bombs, E=2500. Turing toward the approaching A/C hard to port, which cause the two bombs to overshoot the boat. After the fly-over, "ALARM!".

1817 - At T=25, ejecting one Bold (9 pcs. left), and running off on course 004°.

1818 - At A-Meter no further bombs or damages, but two destroyers are approaching our diving position.

1821 - At E=7000 to destroyers, rigging for Silent Running. The Escort Carrier seems to have reduced its speed, most likely zig-zagging.

1832 - The two destroyers run off from our diving position, in direction toward the Escort Carrier. As before, one very fast and the other at medium speed.

1842 - At Reception Depth. Secured from Silent Running.

1845 - S-Tiefe. A G&H Destroyer bearing 225°, E=6500, still on search pattern.

1855 - In the B-Periscope a carrier based A/C is seen on our stbd. beam, approaching from NNE, on opposite course, and dropping two bombs in the area of our last diving position, 4250m astern.

1910 - At E=10000, the Destroyer is out of sight (a faint smoke trail can still be seen in the B-Periscope).

1915 - Surfaced after 1h and 3.1nm.

1918 - Qu.1752CG top left - Right after the boat is ventilated and the Compressed Air Supply is filled, the boat is attacked by an Avenger A/C with Machine Guns, bombs and RP-3 Rockets, direct approach from West. Again, turned toward the approaching A/C with A.K., which cause the bombs and rockets to overshoot the boat. Right after the fly-over, "ALARM!".

1921 - At A-Meter, rigged for Silent Running and ran-off on course 0°.

1930 - As the two destroyers about 13000m away are not approaching, secured from silent running.

a) The German occupation government in the Netherlands declared martial law.
b) The "San Marco" Italian naval infantry regiment surrendered at Bizerte, Tunisia.
From O.K.M.:
a) In order to make it possible for the boats to guide in other boats when they themselves have sighted a convoy even when there are major differences in fixes, a shadower's signal buoy has been constructed and two boats (U 358 and U 381) have been equipped with one to try out. The buoy is to be fired as a star or rocket in the same way as the former signal rocket with axial staff, and will be distinguishable by very obvious characteristics from star signals and illuminant rockets, as the enemy often uses these to lead our boats astray. If these buoys are satisfactory, it is intended to use them operationally.
From B.d.U.:
a) U 666 Oblt. Herbert Engel) brought down a "Halifax" (misidentified as a Sunderland) with 6 shots at 1028 in the Bay of Biscay, Qu. BE 6888. The Halifax only strafed the boat on its first attack and received AA hits in one of the port engines during a second run. The pilot then apparently lost control when turning to come in again and the Halifax crashed into the sea about 500m (546 yds) from the boat, killing the crew of eight.
b) U 648 (Oblt.d.R. Peter Arthur Stahl), 168, 381 and 226 refueled from U 459 (KrvKpt. Georg von Wilamowitz-Möllendorf).
c) U 663 (KrvKpt. Heinrich Schmid) was not found and so far, has not reported. According to dead reckoning she must enter port at the latest on 12.5.
d) U 531 and 438 were probably caught unawares and sunk in the thick fog while operating on convoy No.36, U 438 was probably lost after a daylight attack. U 630 and U 192 (Oblt. Werner Happe) did not report at all after attacking the convoy. Last message from U 630 was dated 21.4. as she left the supply boat in BD 25. U 192 last radioed on 3.5. from AJ 3757 (Convoy No. 33). Both these boats may therefore have been lost earlier.
