I'm confused, is 'stopped' French for 'blown up so hard that we're currently breathing in parts of it'?

In french, in this case, stopped would mean intercepted... :)
But after this torp launched sideway, he nicely sunk.

Also, encountered plenty warships both sides, and was spectator of nice sea battles...
