Guys,
I installed OLC's 16km Ultra-High Detail Beta last night and did a quick patrol around the coast of the UK - before getting sunk in the Channel.... (only a test after all  ). I'll be testing this again today with the medium and low-res versions too for comparison. Anyway, here are a selection of the countless pics taken using this mod. As I'm on a laptop I don't have additional numpad keys, so the GUI is also shown, but you can get the time I took the screenshot from that I guess. I have converted the images to highly compressed JPEG's, naturally the original Bitmaps are of much higher resolution. Myaxle's screenshots look a lot worse than what I'm seeing on my screen [Edit: just saw your latest shot, Myaxle... that looks nicer :)] and Pheonix's don't look that great either. I don't know if this is older hardware, laptop-graphics, or what? :hmm: |

Whatever it is, it can't be very "high spec" as you claim. My 3 year old desktop does a solid 30fps in the 16km Ultra, and that's with AA turned on. |
OLC,
I've tested this earlier today and with the Medium scene.dat file I was able to hold 50-60fps pretty much the entire patrol, and graphically it didn't look much different from the High version to be honest. (Edited) Anyway, I have found a couple of 'odd' graphic appearances when using this mod. I'm just converting the images to JPEG and will upload them soon. Px3000 |
OK, here's some pics taken on a second patrol - 1941 out of Lorient. Patrol is west of Gibraltar.
This is using the MEDIUM Scene.dat file included in the Beta. As with my previous posts I haven't set any AA or AF on the card - these are just game shots without any tweaking. This time I was able to hold high 50's to 60fps - even with ships, planes etc. on screen. Even the harbour didn't make it slow down with all it's traffic. Once again they are compressed JPEG's for bandwidth reasons. @OLC. After the first few pics showing the mod I have included some of what happens after I sank the Freighter and a couple relating to the sub. It's hard to describe the ship sinking issue, but a 'black mass' like a dark reflection appears on the surface. But if you raise the camera up (i.e. go higher with it), the 'mass' appears to follow. Very odd. It goes as high as the ship goes down. It's related to the ship somehow. Anyway, here's the pics. Px3000 Flypast - I like this shot: http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...ol/Flypast.jpg Heavy Seas crossing the Bay of Biscay: http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r.../HeavySeas.jpg Evening (and you can see I now maintain 60fps): http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...ol/Evening.jpg Underwater: http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...Underwater.jpg The Target: http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...rol/Target.jpg Lining up for the shot: http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...l/LiningUp.jpg Torpedo Hit! Second was a dud...: http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...TorpedoHit.jpg OK, here's where it gets a bit odd. After the ship began sinking, panning the camera around displays the 'black mass' reflection: http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...l/Problem3.jpg http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...l/Problem4.jpg http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...l/Problem5.jpg With the sub I also noticed a straight-line that appears ahead of the sub when the bow is out of the water - is this related to the work you are doing? I captured it twice at 2 separate locations, but it occured frequently: http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...ubProblem1.jpg http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...ubProblem2.jpg |

The difference between low/high/medium/ultra is only visible near the horizon (don't look through binocs to see it, cos that "fixes" it - just look at the horizon from the bridge). Quote:

Hi OLC,
RE. your line: "The difference between low/high/medium/ultra is only visible near the horizon (don't look through binocs to see it, cos that "fixes" it - just look at the horizon from the bridge)." That is exactly what caused the issue originally. From the bridge if I looked out across the horizon it was very choppy on the fps - but the biggest impact was when it was day-time and sunny. Night-time wasn't AS bad - I lost about 15-20 fps. But as soon as the sun began to rise it would slow to a crawl. As you say though, the moment you use binoculars the fps went straight back up to normal levels. Px3000 |
That brown water spray is unexpected... are you using a particle effects mod?

These are external views of a sinking ship, right? I'll see if I can replicate... Quote:
OK thanks for the feedback, I'll see what I can do. |
OLC,
"That brown water spray is unexpected... are you using a particle effects mod?" Not that I'm aware of. I do use a smoke mod (it was on a thread recently and I preferred it to the standard GWX one). Whether that has an impact I'm not sure. I'll remove all mods later and put them back - see if it has any effect. One other thing. The 'black mass' - I do recall seeing it appear once when I used your alpha release. Cheers Px3000 |

Yep

I think you are right, this is a stock problem and ive also seen it using GWX. It does seem to happen when coming out of TC. |
The black mass thing is already there in 2.0, only not over such a large area. Normaly I tend to see it on the other side of a ship from the pov.
