Well, I don't like this!!!

When I returned to the game, SH3 Commander rolled back and I bacame an Ensign again :damn: . During my patrol I was told that a ship was spotted at short range (but I saw no ship) :damn: and then I was told it rammed us (I looked and there was no damage) :damn: I completed the patrol and was told I was promoted and received a medal, so I looked and I had actually LOST all the medals I had earned prior to installing this programme. What's going on with this program?????

I WANT to get rid of this darn nav map with the ruler on the right hand side and the compass around my sub and get back to the normal SHIII nav map, and I WANT to see the ships before I am told I got rammed.

I don't think I like this programme :damn: :down: Robert

It sounds like you've installed other mods, because as far as I know (and I made almost all the mods that went into SH3 Commander, and I know what's in all those I didn't make) SH3 Commander can't make you an ensign. The patrol shenanigans you experienced can't be caused by SH3 Commander. I didn't even know the message for ramming was in the game (maybe it's in the English language version). Losing lots of medals could happen if you had chosen the auto-fix button for medals for all your crew, but it's a lot of work, and you'd definitely know you were doing it. SH3 Commander will allow you to give any medal, so this can at least be fixed, but since you lost ALL your medals, again, it can't be SH3 Commander causing this.

As for the nav map and ruler being in a weird place, again, can't be SH3 Commander-related unless it's caused by a severe misreading (or ignoring of) of SH3 Commander's Help file. SH3 Commander does absolutely nothing with the nav tools.

If you're blaming SH3 Commander for all this, you're blaming the wrong program. What other mods have you installed recently?

Note: the only highlighted notes in the SH3 Commander Help file are these:

IMPORTANT!!! In order to avoid any potential file integrity problems, ALWAYS perform a rollback in SH3 Commander BEFORE:
- enabling or disabling any mods, either via JSGME or manually;
- uninstalling or reinstalling Silent Hunter III;
- uninstalling SH3 Commander.

Untold weirdness can result from ignoring these rules.

Apart from that, I think we need JScones to weigh in on this one. He's much more attuned to what strange instabilities have been attributed to SH3 Commander, and he may know exactly what has gone wrong in this case.

If you're using SH3 Commander as the Help file says, it's absolutely 100% impossible for SH3 Commander to screw up your game.

Prior to installing SH3 Commander, I had installed JSGME, MVP-1.0 and RUb1.45 (I think this is where the nav map came from) then I installed SH3 Commander 2.5 and add-on, then I installed Augie64 recmanualmod, JCW-Intro, Sound Trainer, Intro_q1, and removed the game pause.

So, I think what I'm going to do, now that I'm back at base is to Uninstall SH3 Commander, uninstall RUb1.45. The I will run the game to see what happens. If the nav screen looks okay, I will not reinstall RUb1.45 or do I HAVE to have it??? I will follow your directions on what I should do to FIX the nav screen. BUT I was Oberleutnant z. S. before I installed SH3 Commander. WHen I installed it, it told me I was an Ensign and it is sticking with that. I tried to change it but it rolled me back again to Ensign. What happened to my medals I had. I will check when I try the game again without SH3 COmmander. Robert.

If you're new to the game (or new to mods) I'd advise against using RUb. A better choice of major mod for the beginner would be the Grey Wolves (GW) mod, which is a bit more attuned to the casual player. If you're a realism junkie, RUb or NYGM would be the way to go, but I'd try SH3 Commander first, because it's easy to use and it's going to give you a lot in an easy to control format. The other major mods (RUb, IUb, NYGM, GW) give you a lot, but they are all or nothing, and there may be a lot not to like if you're used to the standard game.

The JSGME utility is a mod installer, not a mod. You use it to install all mods (except SH3 Commander which is also really a mod installer) so that they can be easily removed.

As for MVP, SH3 Commander already has it. I don't know what the Augie64 recmanualmod, JCW-Intro, Sound Trainer and Intro_q1 mods are. I'd be cautious about using these, as some of them may be included in the larger scale mods (RUb, IUb, NYGM, GW) you're considering. The mod that removes the game pause - again, I've never heard of it - but this can be done via SH3 Commander too, by setting 'When game paused' to 1 in the options menu.

I advise you to uninstall everything, and perhaps uninstall and re-install the game (keep your saved game files). You'll probably save yourself a bunch of time if you do this, and you'll be sure of getting a clean game. Then just try it with SH3 Commander. You can mess with settings in that and get used to how it works. Once you're satisfied with it, then try other mods (but remember to rollback before installing anything, and always use JSGME to install all mods.

Beery, the one thing I DO NOT like about SH3 COmmander is the roll back, It keeps rolling me back to Ensign and I lost all the medals I had PRIOR to installing it. Robert.

It doesn't roll back your rank or your medals. It just uninstalls the mods that it put into the game in the first place. Like I said before, it's not doing what you think it's doing. Doing a rollback can't remove your medals unless you installed another mod while SH3 Commander was in effect (which is why the Help file warns against doing this).

I'm sorry Beery, I did not see any help file. How do I stop SH3 Commander from being in effect before I install a mod? I'm sorry that I'm stupid or don't understand. Please get back to me because I am in port and I am going to do Patrol 21 over again and I just installed the VIIB Bow Fix. I am currently Oberleutnant z. Sr. and if it rolls me back to Ensign again and takes away my previously awarded medals, I most certainly will NOT use it even though I think it might be good to use. Robert.

You just do a rollback. However, if you did a rollback AFTER installing a mod - i.e. if you installed a mod while SH3 Commander was in effect and THEN did a rollback, it's almost certain that this is where the problem lies, because doing this would uninstall parts of the mod you installed. If this was the case you'll very probably have to do a full uninstall and re-install of the game in order to undo the problems. If you do this, keep your save game files and after re-installing the game restart your game from the point before you experienced the problems. This will ensure that you get back your career fully intact.

It's human nature to ignore readme and help files - I commit this crime all the time, hehe (much to Jaesen's displeasure, LOL). Maybe the importance of reading SH3 Commander's Help file should be made clearer when installing it. I'll suggest it to Jaesen.

I did not do the roll back, SH3 Commander did when I launched Silent Hunter III through it. SH3 Commander does the roll back every time I start Silent Hunter III through SH3 Commander.

SH3 Commander *corrects* the erroneous US rank labels of the original game.

The stock game uses:
Quote:

160=Seaman
161=Senior Seaman
162=Chief Seaman
163=Warrant Officer
164=Senior Warrant Officer
165=Chief Sr. W. Officer
166=Sub-Lieutenant
167=Lieutenant Jr.
168=Lieutenant Sr.
169=Lieutenant Sr.
170=Lieutenant Jr.;Lieutenant Sr.
171=Lieutenant Sr.;Lieutenant Commander
172=Lieutenant Commander;Commander
173=Commander;Captain Jr.
174=;Captain
SH3 Commander uses (which is as close to correct as the game will allow):
Quote:

160=Apprentice Seaman
161=Seaman 2cl.
162=Seaman 1cl.
163=Petty Officer 1cl.
164=Chief Petty Officer
165=Warrant Officer
166=Midshipman
167=Ensign
168=Lieutenant (j.g.)
169=Lieutenant (j.g.)
170=Ensign; Lieutenant (j.g.)
171=Lieutenant (j.g.);Lieutenant
172=Lieutenant;Lieutenant Commander
173=Lieutenant Commander;Commander
174=;Captain
If you think you *really* are an Lt (j.g.) then you're wrong. You *really* are an Ensign.

However, if you're not happy then:
a) Set the "Rank translations" option in SH3 Commander to "German" (I *think* you are using German rank labels???). The German labels were corrected by the devs in patch 1.3 or 1.4b, using teh original fix that I provided for RUb and SH3 Commander;
b) edit SH3 Commander's "\Cfg\ Menu static.txt" file and change the 160-174 labels back to the stock SH3 game ones, if you want US rank labels;
c) don't use SH3 Commander.

Also, don't forget that there are other mods that adjust the rank labels too. I am aware of at least one (can't remember the name) that erroneously includes a rank to the detriment of a correct one. You must also consider this with the mods you have installed, especially if any of the above three options do not "fix" the problem to your liking.

One thing though, SH3 Commander will not remove player medals nor will it demote you (apart from the aforementioned US rank label realignment). Again, mods change this aspect, so you will need to review what you have installed.

Personally, as an aside, if you are going to continually install every mod you find here carte blanche, then I wouldn't recommend using SH3 Commander until you are happy that you have everything running comfortably. PLEASE remember, not all mods are compatible with each other. You should install and test, install and test, install and test, paying PARTICULAR attention to the associated readme so that you know what you are getting. Then if something goes wrong you're more likely to pinpoint the problem easier. Don't just install, install, install. You'll never pinpoint problems and in the end the only fix will be a total reinstall of teh game.

robj250!

I think you mean, when talking about roll back, the text "rolling back previus copied files" coming on the screen when Cmdr starts to load? :hmm:

If so, you don't need to worry about it. That doesn't mean any problems to you = you'll keep your career file untouched what becomes to rank and medals. When Beery is talking about roll back, he means "forced roll back" you can do by clicking the roll back button. It's essential to do before activating / deactivating any mods.

Maybe this can help you also.
