:ahoy:

Most always I try to help the new commanders - I think BdU would approve of the senior officers guiding the new Kaleun.

If I do not know the answer I at least can steer them to all the great references.

Another reason may be the inherent "safety" of being an SP game -- exception to WAW -- there are no online personality conflicts other than some minor rebuffs at accomplishments. The nature of the game lends itself to personalized play. Where in some MMP everything is "set" and standardized. Then people in MMP tend to compete so fiercely they spill anger over others in their attempt to lay claim to being the "best."

While here at SH3 we all share a single enemy, granted AI, but still that is a unifying theme we all can adhere to, a common enemy. We foster and engender learning and even a sense of teamwork Vs that enemy.

BTW for me I am learning everyday and each time I play I gain something from the knowledge base, the living data base gathered here at Subsim.

My hats off to Uncle Neal, the moderators and even more the general population for educating and entertaining me all at the same time.

LOL me? A fanatic even now? Yes! I confess being so obsessed with SH3 during my vacation in Europe last Spring 2005 I went to Laboe and nearly collapsed being overcome with joy when I lay upon the Captain's bunk, to touch the observation scope, to stand on the very place that represents so much history - truly an emotional 3 hours I spent at the place...so much imagery I transfer to the game and now I walk the length of my Type VII in the game in awe at the accomplishments of the Kriegsmariner U-boat men. (oops I digress)

The community we are building here is something special gentlemen and ladies (how can I not mention here our favorite lady of the sea The Avon Lady :) )

Please keep coming new players this place is unlike any I have seen....

Very nice site, just getting back into SH3 myself. After several months away the number of new mods etc is overwhelming.

A tip of the hat to all the fine folks here who help out Newbs and Newb questions.

Hi guys,

Im new to Silent Hunter III and was wondering why when I go on Patrol, the Royal Navy keep trying to sink my U-Boat.

I do not attack English ships so why do they keep doing this?

We should all live in Peace. Except for the French. We should all attack the French. :arrgh!:

DMarkwick 02-12-06 03:23 PM

I guess I'm spoiled, I came here from another nice site (frugalsworld.com) where the guy who owns it maintains a philosophy that anyone can ask any question on a sim, no matter the nature of it and people WILL answer in a straight-up, polite way, because that is the purpose of the forums. Now, people who reply might well link to a previous post, but most people answer in the first person, and will thus gather the new poster more into the folds :)

I think demanding that new members must first scour the search facility not only discourages, but it also removes a perfectly good excuse for a new member to become known to old members.

NeonSamurai 02-12-06 03:45 PM

I personaly never have had a problem answering questions from new players, and lets face it using forum search engines can be a pain to use in trying to find the answer to your specific question.

However i do think new subsim people should at least read the stickies first before asking (the stickies will usualy either contain the answer, or a link to it for most basic questions). :)

Oh and frugalsworld.com is a good site too even if it mainly is aimed at one game (falcon 4)

Wulfmann 02-12-06 04:53 PM

I would answers newbe questions more often if I had the answers myself :rotfl:

When a new Kaleun shows up (Post count?) the fact he wants contact is as important as the answer. Knowing he has a group that he can come to is a big part of the experience.

As for targeting DDs, well, I prefer not to. If I do I agree one fish should do it on a set up but when threatened I use 2 in self defense.
If I am firing at an escort I have already screwed up, IMO as I need to sneak in to a convoy not blast my way in. Besides all my escorts are now 3 or 4 crew rated and I have added many more escorts to the convoys. When I sink a DD that brings 3 or 4 criss crossing me.
I had one surprise me from behind a C3 and he threw DCs as I watched. I said, "This is not good" as they hit right near my peri and I realized I was at 1.5 mag!!!! I went to the crew page and it quickly looked like Red Square on May Day.
In 1943 a convoy usually has 8-10 escorts (My editing, not stock or RUB), sinking one cuts my chances of success by just shy of 100% to worse. However, once discovered sinking one may allow me the chance to survive which should be priority number one. Be more aggressive my ars!

You can do anything you want here as long as you do it in an adult and respectful way (in the appropriate forum of course and with an eye to the rules and regs.).

I was making a point about the type of reaction you get at Frugalsworld if you say anything good about Lock-on.

Why don't we get a sticky going about what are the best must-have mods? I see that question pop up several times lately, but the newest of those questions are not getting answered like they used to (I agree, people are probably tired of seeing them so they don't bother replying anymore) I just started adding mods a week ago, and it was too time consuming trying to find the good threads using the search. Should be a sticky!

Tonnage_Ace 02-12-06 09:20 PM

I just go in to this game(don't play sims at all) about a month and a half ago but I wouldn't consider myself a n00b so don't let my post count fool you. I spent like six hours working on wiki's plotting manual figuring out which method I like better and memorizing it so I didn't have to alt-tab back and forth. But until I made my first post, mostly answering n00bs questions, I read all yours. Really great community(thanks avon for the mod list, to give me a head start, keep updating them!) and no question needs repeating so I'll help someone but only if they've obviously given a concerted effort to help themselves. Oh and BTW, how do I change my base to Vancouver, no flotilla lists it and it'd be kinda neat.

Salvadoreno 02-12-06 11:14 PM

Vancover? huh?? You can only transfer to Wilmshaven, Toulon, Brest, LA Spezia, Kiel, Bergen, La ROchelle, Lorient, and 1 other i cannot think of. Those are the only ports i thought u could get too.

Last time I checked, Canada wasn't on the Axis side, and SHIII didn't have much shipping in the Pacific :P

I was of the opinion it's better to prioritize your targets based on how much reknown it's going to earn you and a DD(?) is surely worth more than a coastal merchant? *reference below* (Sorry i'm not familar with the DD acronym, i'm assuming it's a destroyer of some variety.)

Either way - it's always cooler watching a military ship going up in smoke

Taken from the wikipedia:

Renown per ship
Warships

King George Battleship = 1500
Nelson Battleship = 1400
Revenge Battleship = 1100
Illustrious Carrier = 900
Hipper Carrier = 760

TugBoat = 30

Small Coastal Vessel = 20
Fishingboat = 20

On a side note - I encountered my first convoy last night. Set myself up to take out as many as possible at 90 degrees on manual targeting.

I decided on taking out the leading escort (a rather large destroyer) and fired the rest off at the freighters, sinking 2 and damaging one.

The problem was that after that they all start varying their course, not to mention the remaing escorts all come after you then. (The fire, smoke and sound of grinding metal is all a bit of a giveaway!)

Any tips on taking out the rest of the convoy once my torps have been reloaded for a 2nd round? I suppose I could go under and cruise along with them until they've forgotten about me... :hmm:

Hook, line and sinker Salvadoreno :rotfl:

As far as convoys are concerned, after I saw that Renown guide in community manuals I just go for Troop Transports, Passenger Liners and T3's, plus the odd BB if I see one :arrgh!: . Before I struggled to sink everything even those coastals.
