Wow. I feel seasick just watching it. :|\ :|\

Kapitan 01-04-06 12:29 PM

sovremmeny is a destroyer east and west classfied
udaloy is a frigate (pollitical reasons) however is a destroyer in the west but both sovremmeny and udaloy are as large if not larger than ticonderoga cruisers also making them eligable for cruiser designation.

kirvack is a large anti sub patrol ship yes russian designation but in the west its the size of the perry frigate

reason for such designations threw out the entire navy is too keep the big ships, its more pollitical than anything.

if you think thats bad try the submarines

BigBadVuk 01-04-06 12:32 PM

Did u managed btw to identify all these ships.
I recognised,Kirov,Kuznetcov,Moscow( i think)....

What? Tico weighs nearly 10000 tons loaded and even the Burke just under 9500. Even the Spruances are heavier and longer at over 9000t each and over 170m long. The two Russkies both weigh in under 9000t and under 165m long.

Sovermenny is a eskadrenny minonsets. Does the word "Frigate" even exist in Russian?

He said "Patrol Ship". Nothing wrong I can see :D

Didn't the BPK, SKR, TAKR ... etc designations originate from the Soviet era?

I've heard of two somewhat divergent sets.

OK, I've heard of PLA, which just means "Submarine, Atomic" (nothing wrong with that - it is just SSN in Russian). From what I can see, these tend to have Captains of the 2nd rank.

I've heard of APK1R, "Atomic Submarine/Submerged? Cruiser, 1st Rank" for the Oscar. Nothing wrong with this. "Cruiser" seems to be used for larger Russian warships (Kirov, Slava...). OK, so this is an atomic submarine, but it is distinguished from the others, because it is a 1st Rank Cruiser, rather than a 2nd Ranked vessel. Right, got that.

The Oscar is/was also apparently a group in an alternate designation, PLARK (Submarine Atomic - Rocket Ballistic, almost exactly SSGN). My guess is that this is a wider designation, which also included (in Soviet days) such subs as the Charlie, which is too light to qualify as a first-ranked vessel. Certainly the description is descriptive enough.

I've heard of RPKSN "Rocket Submarine Cruiser Strategic". OK, it is a Rocket bearing Submarine Cruiser (big, first rank) of the Strategic level.

These also fall into the alternate "PLARB" designation, which is even clearer (Submarine, Atomic - Rocket Ballistic, almost the same as SSBN). Again, I think this has something to do with the older (Yankee) ballistic submarines in Soviet days being too light to qualify for first-rank. But all the newer ones that are left these days are heavy enough.

I don't know about some of the ship's names but the classes where Kuznetsov (the only one I'm sure about the name since there is only one...), Kirov, Slava, Boris Chilkin, Sovermenny (the ship at the end), unknown small-ish ship might be a Corvette or support ship (upper left at the start).

The sea just makes them all look like models out there. Forget sub-hunting...negotiate a peace and find dry land, pronto!

Fitz62STG 01-04-06 06:36 PM

Looking at the video I saw the following -

Boris Chilkin AOR
Kuznetsov CVGH - Admiral Kuznetsov
Kirov CGN - Petr Veliky
Slava CG - Marshal Ustinov
Sovremenny DDG - Admiral Ushakov
The small ship at the beginning looks like a large ocean going tug, which would not be uncommon for the Russians to have with them if they had a battlegroup go out. Can't be too sure who may break down while they are underway.

GEPARD 01-04-06 09:35 PM

the song is very affecting

Kapitan 01-08-06 12:31 PM

fritz got most right but he didnt mention the udaloy DDG

the admrialof the fleet kuznetsov is not CVGH but is a CVG proper aircraft carrier not helicopter carrier.

saw there

kuznetsov
peter the great
moskva
a sovremenny
a udaloy
boris chelkin
ocean going tug

wouldnt surprise me if one or two subs were there too
