Ok it's good to know (and bad) that it's affecting more than just a few people. I'm also a big fan of your videos btw, great stuff!

Hi Guys
The SH5 game only installs part of the game this can be seen after you install SH5 and go to the Program Files (x86) directory and open up the game launcher only a small amount of the files are showing.
When you update the game from v1.0.5.0 to to v1.2.0 the rest of the files some 62 complete the setup.
The problems arise when you start the game from the SH5.exe and you run into problems and Uplay decides not to co-operate.

My suggestion is to go to the Control Panels Program and Fatures and uninstall the Ubisoft/Uplay Game Launcher.
You now have the option to install a completely independent game launcher in any drive and folder of your choice, which in my case I use this one in D:\Ubisoft, the folder before the main Silent Hunter 5 main game folder.
SH5 Game Launcher Install It Anywhere On Any Drive > Includes Download Link

If you now open up the game launcher and go to the first game launcher application which is the 32 bit one (not the 64 bit also showing) you can change it by going to properties and then run it as an administrator.

I believe there is some miscommunication. I think for all of us vanilla SH5 runs fine. When re-installing vanilla SH5 it seems to automatically update to version 1.2.0 (or some sort of hybrid that only some players recently got) without any user input which I think is the issue. The problems start when we install TWoS mod.

For me personally, when I start the patcher to install the mod, only 8 patches work. there is a pop up for the 9th saying: 'version error. A version of SH5 is a different version than expected. Patch: independent engine controls change 2. Reason: Bytes read does not equal bytes expected by patch'.

The rest of the installation goes fine. TWoS even starts and gets to the main menu. The problem is that when we press continue campaign or new campaign it causes an instant CTD. The thing with UPlay is that you have to be online to download and install the game, so the game gets automatically updated upon installation.

The seemingly obvious issue is that SH5 has been updated for some players and is now incompatible with TWoS. Which sucks...

My apologies if you completely understand what is going on and it is my error but hopefully this clears up some misunderstandings.

Yeah, thats exactly my situation to Zeebo.
I do have the independent launcher set up at the moment but its the update to Uplay that seems to have made TWoS mod non-compatible. Vanilla game works fine.

For me when I start the independent launcher it starts off looking like UPlay from 2012 and then immediately updates to a slightly newer looking UPlay and then once more to the current UPlay. All before I can even log into my account. I may have done something incorrectly but I am unsure.

Hi Zeebo
Yes a bit of mis-communication my apologies for that.
If the game loads to the main menu and shows v1.2 in the top right corner then your game is installed correctly and will work when modded.

This error occurs because one of the patches has been incorrectly installed.

Each of the 9 patches is looking for the Silent Hunter5 main game folder.
Until this is fixed you cannot proceed with the game.

In the main game folder open the folder TDW_GenericPatcher_v_168_0
Open the Patches folder, no patches should be showing here.
The SH5 folder should be showing all 9 patches.

What is game > Dvd > Download > STEAM?

What is your games installation path?

For what it's worth @ Taff & others, I am at +1
I have tried a repair from Uplay - which worked, but is just the Vanilla game now.
I'll try re-patching TWoS and see what happens.

Edit: If I run the SH5 shortcut as admin it asks for my original code (which I don't have anymore).
If I run from Uplay, the launcher sticks on loading.

Pity - was quite enjoying playing this again.

So yeah, it really looks like they pushed a new binary through Uplay.

I've just reinstalled my SH5 (DVD version) and the game automatically download and install the update 1.2.0. TWoS installation went without problems. What ever all this is about it seems that only affects uplay user...:hmmm:

THEBERBSTER 10-16-19 10:49 AM

Hi Harmer
Can you confirm your SH5 installation path please?
For example C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5

Can you confirm when your vanilla game loads to the main menu you can see v1.2 in the top right hand corner?
This needs to be done with a clean SH5 installation and not with TWoS having been tried to install on it.

I have a UPlay SH4, but with my Steam SH5 in the same folder, and UPlay automatically picked-up my SH5 Steam install, and offered to put it there when I did the inital SH4 Gold install when this Win10 laptop was purchased. I have everything in the "C:\Ubisoft \Ubisoft Game Launcher" folder, which I made during the install, and had deleted the "Program Files (x86)\" portion from the path. I have had no ill effects from UPlay (as of yet), and I just did a "test" re-install yesterday. As soon as I did my first SH5 start after the re-install, the game did its "update" check, and UPlay downloaded its "update" (from September of this year). Afterwards, I did a TWoS install / activation, and everything went as expected. I would suspect install "path" issues myself also. May-haps if the Launcher or the game is in Program Files, it then "helps" the player by "tagging" the SH5.exe file??... :hmmm: :salute:

Ha thanks @vdr1981, You are indeed right, I have dusted off my DVD copy and indeed TWoS works perfectly with that.
Previously I was downloading it through the Uplay launcher which was CTD when starting a new game. So there clearly has been some change to the Uplay download version..very frustrating indeed.

THEBERBSTER 10-16-19 01:23 PM

Hi Taff
IIRC the Dvd only installs to version 1.0.5.0 and cannot make the connection to Ubisoft which it is looking for because Ubisoft no longer supports SH5.
Only by using the GameUpdater does the game get updated to v1.2.0 by the necessary files downloaded from Uplay.

So to summarize...If the game is installed and updated trough the uplay, TWoS can not be fully installed because Generic Patcher does not recognize SH5.exe? Is this correct? Can every one confirm this?

As far as I can tell, yes. It seems ubisoft added a patch for uplay users only and now the generic patcher isn't compatible with the uplay version of SH5.

How about to run steam conversion tool which will replace your executable (Silent Hunter 5\Resources\TWoS_Setup\SH5updateSteam.exe) and then try to activate the Generic Patcher . Maybe that can do the trick. :hmmm:

vdr1981 10-16-19 04:10 PM

If nothing change in next few days I'll create special test v2.2.16 installer for uplay owners which will hopefully bypass this issue. However, it will probably be required for the player to manually advance his campaign once campaign chapter reaches it's end date, using "TWoS_Alternative Campaign Progression.pdf" tutorial from documentation folder...

fitzcarraldo 10-16-19 04:40 PM

My version is DVD, but it install Uplay and actualizes the game to 1.02. My game starts with Uplay, from Uplay is launched, and never I had a problem with 2.2.6 and the patcher. All works as expected. I have savegames in the Ubi cloud via Uplay and no problems to reload the games, too.

Regards.
