Im on Delmarva far from the storm track and yes the boat has been sold. We got a R/V now.:Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

I told my mom she should probably leave the area which incidently is the projected landfall. But like a true Floridian she just shrugged and said its not her first storm and she aint movin'. I told her that this might sound weird but I dont think I would do any different.

Ah well. I think its going to stay off shore anyway.

One thing that I still marvel at is the accuracy of long range hurricane prediction, the computer modeled paths; when I was young there was nothing like this. Meteorologists would make guesses but hurricanes were noted for being unpredictable.

Stay safe, man. Want to keep us updated?

Yeah we're planning on staying put, the other plan would be to go to my grandparents house (they have storm shutters while most of the townhouses and apartments in the development where we live do not), and we are about six miles or so from the coast. In two to three hours is when the wind and rain are really supposed to pick up. The hurricane is expect to be closer to the coast around midnight tonight. I'll try to update when I can, but any time after three o' clock eastern the chances of power loss increase and we don't have a generator.

Looking at the other models Im thinking sustained hurricane force winds will remain offshore. Its gonna be close though which is why I think NWS has no other alternative but to adjust the forecast track to the westward most model.

Skirting the shoreline as it appears to be doing will wreck havoc. Storm surge....

Rockstar 10-06-16 12:18 PM

Might be a problem but its moving fairly fast and the majority of winds will most likely have a westerly component which might tame that surge a bit.

Tornados! Now those blasted things are everywhere.

The storm surge will be significant.

Can tell you my Mom have been a witness among some few others to see a Tornado grow and do some damage right outside her Kitchen windows

From what I remember(been some decades ago) It was in the autumn, it was cloudy and windy, when the sky suddenly turned very dark and violet. My Mom went to the window to see what it was and she saw something that looked like a funnel starting from the sky and down and from the ground something similar arose and they meet in the middle and then this tornado made its 10 second mayhem - drew up a tree, destroying some things in a playground,

We was told, this, what my Mom and others had been witness to, is so rarely, not many people living ind Sweden have seen this(I lived in Sweden at that time)

Tornadoes are fairly common across Europe but usually not to the intensity that is seen in the US, where specific climatic conditions mean that the area is ripe for severe storms. Other places do have similar spots, the whole of the Phillipines is quite an active area, and the Pampas area of Argentina, and Eastern India and Bangladesh.
I was lucky enough to see a waterspout spin up and then rope out a few weeks ago, quite spectacular and one from my bucket list. Wouldn't mind seeing a plains tornado from a safe distance, but that's not likely to happen.

I imagine that Matthew will probably drop a series of waterspouts and tornados along its path too. Hurricanes like to do that.

Update as of 3:30 Eastern.
The winds here have been increasing since my second post and there's some slight rain but it's no worse then right now then some thunderstorms I've seen in the past. Matthew is still moving to the northwest at 14 miles per hour with sustained winds of 132.34 mph with landfall expected around 1:00AM eastern time, with the eye of the storm pass within a few miles or so of where I live. Right now the eye of the storm is between Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas.

I went through Andrew It was said Tornadoes caused the most severe damage. Monkeys everywhere.

Update: 7:04PM Eastern.

Had up to seven power blips between 4:30 to 5:00pm, not actual power outages but rather 1-2 second delays just long enough to mess up the clock on the microwave and shut off the TV. Just had our first major rain a few minutes ago, the first we've had here all day and the winds are still getting stonger. Now there's a couple of concerns for fellow Subsimmers up in North Carolina and Virginia, with Matthew moving up the Florida coast there is also hurricane Nicole, a Cat 1 which is moving NNW at 7 mph and is to the south of Bermuda, so be warned there's the chance, it might be a slim chance however of getting hit with two hurricanes in that region although NOAA is forecasting that hurricane Nicole is expected to slow down and meander. There is also a system to the northeast of Venezuela and NOAA is giving that system a less then 40% chance of becoming a tropical depression and/or storm.

Sorry, it is true storm surge can be significant. However when I said it may not. I was thinking it would be negligable in the area where my parents live in Florida. Carolinas will probably get hammered, again, I was up there for Hugo doesnt take much for house to suddenly be on waterfront property

Torplexed 10-06-16 07:25 PM

Looking pretty scary down there in the southeast. Hopefully Matthew won't turn out to be Katrina's bigger and meaner brother. :o

How you doing, Kptlt. Neuerburg? Still connected? You should be getting a bit of wind now. Man, it looks ugly as hell, the models are showing the eyeholding H-force winds and riding right up the coast all the way to SC. When Cat 3 Ike rode into Galveston it was a direct hit and dissipated fairly quickly. Florida is going to get hit hard.

Rockstar 10-07-16 06:16 AM

Welp, it was for the most part a non event in Palm Bay.

Onkel Neal 10-07-16 08:32 AM

Thank god. Appears the storm is staying a nice distance offshore.:D

For the Carolinas it looks like 15 inches of rain with the surge!
