Actually DS-9 is rather liked in the Trek prop building community. It's Voyager that is disliked the most as a TV series with the JJ verse movies being the most hated of all, and it's the connection to the movies that is the most worrisome bit about the new series.

As far as TOS not living up to the hype of the opening narration, you do have to take into account it was a very expensive series to make and all those alien worlds, spacecraft and interior shots had to be built life size on a sound stage. That limitation, and the expense of adding in the special opticals, made finding writers of SF that could create stories the studio could afford to make difficult and more than one top notch author was pissed off by the script rewrites needed.

Huh, I was always told DS-9 strayed the most from what trekkies percieve as Star trek. Apart from JJ (the two movies I thouroghly enjoyed though :) )

I guess it just depends on where one is then. I enjoyed the new movies but they are not of the old ones.

Forget what other say or write, watch it for your self and if you like the series/movies then you buy it or you don't.

Ellison still fumes over the whole re-writing of his original story and I have heard him many times, in radio interviews, detail his dissatisfaction. He also tells the story of how he first presented the story to Shatner. Shatner was to go to Ellison's home in the hills above Los Angeles to get a first look at the script. Ellison says he was at home when he heard a roaring sound; looking out his window, he saw Shatner, on a Harley, coming up the steet. While making the turn into the driveway of the home, Shatner los control of the bike and laid it down. He picked himself up and walked the bike in the rest of the way. After the usual hellos, Ellison gave Shatner the script and left him alone in the living room to read it. Ellison would occasionally sneak a peek at Shatner reading to see if he could gauge Shatner's response to the story. Ellison was sneaking a peek when Shatner had just finished reading; Shatner closed the script, gazed off into the distance and sighed. Ellison thought "Oh, good, the story has moved him." Shatner then reopened the script and started to move his finger deliberately down the pages. It was then Ellison realized Shatner was counting the character lines to see if any other character had more lines than Kirk...

I watched the first and tried to watch the second. The first one was good for 2/3 of the movie and then fell completely apart in the last third of it. I never could get into the second one. It was just to far off of TOS. I could not connect the new characters to the old ones. To me that weren't the Kirk, Spock, Uhura etc. that Iknew from my childhood but completely new characters that only had the names of the old ones. I quit the second movie after about 20min as I just couldn't relate to it. To me that wasn't Star Trek but just another action movie.:(

DS9 is my favourite because it dares to delve into the darker side of human nature with a couple of fantastic episodes dedicated to it "In the Pale Moonlight" and "The Siege of AR558" are two that stand out to me, and indeed there are those who feel that it stood at complete opposites to what Roddenbery set out in his utopian future for humanity. I can understand their viewpoint, but there's only so far you can go with it, I mean even Star Trek VI probed the consequences of inbuilt hatred against a species with Kirk having to face his hatred of the race that killed his son in order to secure peace between the Klingon Empire and the Federation.

In regards to setting the new series after the timeline split (aka just after Spock and Nero went to the Abramsverse) that could work, there's a whole wedge of novels and such which are set after the events of Nemesis and a vague timeline for the rest of the 24th century that can be sketched in.
Alternatively they could always put it in-between the original series and The Next Generation, I mean there's 71 years there which can be explored. First contact with the Cardassians, war with the Cardassians, the Tomed Incident, the battle of Narenda III and so on. Of course, like Enterprise you do have the problem of making sure that the ends meet up, which can put a bit of a limit on story-telling, so perhaps setting it after 2379 or 2387 would be better (I would prefer 2379 since it's before Romulus gets obiliterated and would open up interesting storylines regarding the power vacuum that Shinzons coup and subsequent death created within the Empire).

I have been a Trekkie's since I saw raumschiff enterprise on German TV in the early 70s

I have no certain favorite ST Series ´cause each one is OK in its own way and I don't compare two series or the captains.
