Nice hat. As regards the tartanry stuff, I view it differently these days following a comment by a crofter friend: "there's only one thing better than a tourist....two tourists".

I'll concede that Tartanry is as good a way as any to part gullible tourists from their money. My objection is when the "Brigadoon" image becomes the national identity itself. For some Nats, at least, the maudlin, "Wha's like us?", Flower of Scotland, Robert Burns/Sir Walter Scott image of this country is Scotland, probably because they either don't like, or can't handle, the reality. It's all very well to dream, but dream of a dynamic, modern, 21st Century, democratic European nation. Not some Tartan infested mockery!:down:
