Memphis Belle was one of the very last war films to use real airplanes. Only "CGI" was the replication of a hand full of B-17s to create the illusion that there were many.

Unfortunately there just arent enough to do something on that scale.

Its a lost art :nope:

Well, at that time the Hispanos were all they could get. The Heinkels also were Spanish-built with Rolls-Royce engines. And several of the Spits were later models.

I recall one old movie about a P-47 squadron. The Germans were played by Mustangs. :D

And of course we could compare the real flying in Tora! Tora! Tora! with the CGI of Pearl Wars.

Still better than the these CGI flyboys clones.

@GoldenRivet
I know, but they could use at least one real P51 (there are still some out there;)) and use that one for some of the manoeuvres, then add a few more with CGI that behave like the real thing does.
But what I saw in that trailer reminded me of RC planes but definitely not of warbirds with a mass around 2 metric tons.:shifty:

I have to agree there. In fact the best WW1 replicas I can recall seeing were in Young Indiana Jones and The Attack of The Hawkmen. Nieuports, Albatros and 1-1/2 Strutters. :yep:

Saw the trailer for Red Tails on TV. Was dumbfounded by the choice of electronica for the music track. :06: I might have to see it just to find out if the opening track is period music, or if it's that same electronic piece I heard in the promo. :o:timeout:

Probably pass on the movie though...

What a moving painting. Any idea the title or the artist?

Surprised no one has mentioned Act of Valor. Action movie that stars eight real life active duty SEALs:

It's variously called "Goodbye old Pal", "Goodbye old man" or "Goodbye my old friend". Received a black and white print from my last Warrant Officer's and Sergeant's Mess before I retired that hangs in my computer room (or man cave).

Royal Horse Artillery prints

Thanks for the link. $175 is a lot. I will have to find someplace where I can see it in person before I want to shell out that much.

I have seen Warehorse. Good movie. Fairy tale but a good movie. Redtails is a remake of Tuskegee Airmen. Looks good and I will go see it.

I just saw an ad regarding this.:hmmm:

I'm afraid Redtails is going to be Star Wars, but with P-51s:dead:. I'll still go see it, it can't be any worse than Flyboys or Red Baron.

I miss the old school movies, w/o the CGI.

So do I. The experience just isn't the same without genuine real-world visuals. Some movies though are perfect for CGI, like cartoonish movies; and especially SyFy movies. (Can't have a proper SyFy movie without those cheeeeezy CGI 'gators, sharks, snow/firestorms, yetis, blood/entrail splatter effects, etc :DL)

Warhorse was good being the only good WWI movie in a long time some museum has bought it's replica WWI tank too.

Wouldn't bet on it, there's probably no lower limit to how rotten they can make an aviation war movie.

Watched 12 O'Clock High the other day, stunt-pilot Paul Mantz actually crashed a B-17 for an early scene. Even in black and white it's impressive and makes CGI look like crap.

I watched the Blueray DVD special features for Das Boot. No CGI, all models. I think it still looks better than the CGI. (A well made minature/model)
