Er.. thank you all.. I think?

And yes, RR, I do not use all the games features, I am fully aware of that. I don't actually take it that seriously. I guess it's mostly because I have several other games running in let's Play at the same time. I invest in my channel and making new vids of all kinds of games, along with the other Lords (I share the channel with 4 friends, hence). Submarine sims are definitely not my primary hobby. I am just way to rigid for that. Hyperfocus is not my thing, at all :D

I only recently read up on the entire Pacific theatre (thanks to, in fact, this game) and I know I barely scratch the surface. I'll submerge myself into the area and period as it suits me. And along the way I will be excreting a lot of BS (as is usual in a Let's Play) :P

I also do a lot offline World War 2 related stuff, like miniatures. In fact, there is a Type VII C U-Boat model on my desk in front of me. But mostly, I stick to land warfare when it comes to that:

That's about enough off topicness for now :)

I'll be making and uploading parts 29 and on soon for those interested. Haven't taken the time yet with household chores and other real life stuff interfering :salute:

No, a game company would do it wrong. They need to hire a game enthusiast, like Lord Cucumber, to do it for them. What these war simulation games need is somebody without a clue, somebody having a great time actually showing how the game works. The unspoken message is that YOU can play this game and have fun too.

If the game company did it, they would get newbies so mired in incomprehensible detail, showing off what THEY were proud of, that viewers' eyes would glaze over and they just wouldn't care.

A little enthusiasm and ignorance shows that you don't have to know every feature of the game to have fun. THAT's what the rest of the public, those who Ubi makes grotesque Sims meets Silent Hunter atrocities to try to rope, really care about.

It's a bit like my other hobby, radio control airplanes. The learning curve is vertical. There are simulators and they have some basic use, but people don't use them for that. They dial up the P-51 Mustang, fly it in the sim and they think they're ready. If they buy one the plane's lifetime is measured in seconds. But the newbie doesn't want one of those "boring" trainer airplanes. So his incorrect preconceptions doom him to failure.

If someone actually puts him in contact with a trainer airplane and he finds out it is tons of fun, he can actually succeed.

I'll be looking forward to future episodes, LC. I'm sure there is quite a bit to learn technique-wise, by watching, things that don't really relate to realism. And it's entertaining anyway.

The video files you end up with must be gigantic. What do you use to record your sessions?

LordCucumber 11-20-11 01:08 PM

Fraps. I have a 450 GB harddrive set up for just recording. I usually end up with between 120 to 170 GB in raw videos. When processed, the files I upload rare go over 1.5 gigs (depends on video length, mostly). Really, really basic setup :)

I just finished part 09 and so far I like it.

In his "Let's play" series, LC shows the public how an average player plays the game. He has a good grasp of what should be done, and usually fails hilariously to do it.

We scream in impotent fury as he hires the wrong sailors, sails with empty seats, gives medals to machinist mates 3rd class, pushes the wrong buttons, dives for 6 hours whenever a plane shows up on radar, enters random values in the TDC, forgets to call off battle stations or silent running, fires closed tubes, and still amazingly sends enemy ships to the bottom. It's like Joe Hazelwood has been given command of a sub.

He plays exactly like I do, except in his case it can be attributed to the distraction brought by having to provide a running commentary that is very entertaining and also provides very good explanation on what he's doing.

I'm enjoying this series immensely.

Best description so far! Here, you can have one of my Patrol Star medals....:D

I can add "Ordering CRASH DIVE in the harbor" to that list since my last adventure. And yes, trying to talk through the entire thing whilst trying to play adds to the flavour of ineptness ;)

Actually, he has a partial grasp of what should be done, but somehow manages, hilarously, to do it. (Maybe he can teach at the War College?)

Now THERE's a mistake that gives you about 5 seconds to correct! I think that's a mistake that everybody makes once. (EVERYBODY's entitled to ONE fatal mistake!:D) How much damage did you take on that one?

This is a prime example of what happens when you become a student of RR's tutorials in the Bag of Tricks thread. :haha: Didn't this skipper graduate at the top of his class?:D

Lagger123987 11-23-11 11:34 AM

One of the better Silent Hunter Let's plays I encounter, the one made by youtuber Jefmajor is funny but only on stock version of the game.

None. I realised I pressed that button immediately, and corrected myself. I almost hit the boat in front of my at flank speed, but managed to veer off without further incident :)

I noticed you didn't go check crew morale after that. That would have been interesting.

You did well, grasshopper! There is VERY little time to realize what you have done and correct it there. And extra points for avoiding a collision afterwards.

Well, one part of me was trying not to laugh, and the other was going OMG NO SH*T @#$%^&*!! I'm sure virtual Uncle Sam was happy I didn't mess up the $2.850.000 boat in front of me as well. Gave the other skipper quite a scare there haha.

And yes, I should have checked crew morale, jcope, that would have been interesting. Though I wonder if it would have any effect, to be honest. Does TMO cover impending collission effects on morale?

CCIP 11-24-11 12:44 PM

I'm pretty sure morale in the game is only related to damage + threat status (the game has three different states the sub could be in: normal (cruise), hunter, and prey modes). Since you didn't take any damage and weren't being hunted, the morale wouldn't have changed.

Not that your crew shouldn't hate you for doing that :D

great, a three weeks ago i watch all 50+. videos, i can say only i want more, very funny, my comments are under "dennyleso"

Try watching my first LP, then this one, and see how much this noob had to learn the hard way, with all my flawed knowledge and mistakes, and figure out if you would be so bold if playing a game for a relatively short amount of time, all in front of a live audience.

For the record: I generally ironman the game. I've allowed myself one reload so far in this LP, due to a mission that was too much to chew for me, and quite frankly near impossible, which is the reason why I play so frantically (apart from my lacking knowledge of this theatre of war, which is, truely, minimal, I can only admit to that) and irrationally some times. I want to stay alive, and I will make many mistakes along the way, and finish the campaign, or die trying. I do not intend to play historically accurate in any way, nor do I play in a specific 'right' style to please others.

I play for my own fun, on my own difficulty, and I have an audience who enjoy what I do. So no Dick o'Kane, no perfect plane dodging, no super math solution crap, none of that. I aim by eyeballing and estimating most of my shots, and I am proud I can actually do so quite effectively. I stopped doing things on auto aim a very, very long time ago.

And my boat goes where ever the hell I want it to go. Dumb or not. Deal with it :smug:

im one of your audience....you are the man:yeah::rock::D

denny927 11-24-11 03:30 PM

other lets play is made by " jefmajor", a crazy man where torpedos dont count, his sub is used like torpedos against sampan....13 lets plays if i remember, but again, funny:D
