My vote: VIIC
I like attacking convoys. And it's always hard to decide for me either. Early war - definitely IXB. Large amount of torpedo plus greater surface speed is big advantage, and because avoiding DC is easy, agility of type VII isn't really advantage. But after from second half of 1942, if you still want to attack convoy and survive, you need VIIC.
Radar equipped planes, modern ASDIC's, Seek & Destroy DD patrols make life of VIIC's captain hard one, and life of IXC's captain short one. In short: IXC is better attacker, and VIIC makes your chances for survive bigger. If you're "old lone wolf", and you have your "always working tricks" you can try IXC. It gives you opportunity to complete annihilation of enemy convoy. You don't need to evade escort, you just sinking them. But usually IXC it's better in hunting "big ones" travelling without escort. Dealing with convoy is usually job for VIIC. |
Personally, I quite like turtles.

Ah yes, the duck. Although they just don't handle like a Turtle does underwater.

I like the IX-types better, they can carry more torpedoes and that's always a plus. :yeah:
If you plan your attack well, you almost never need the couple of seconds faster diving that a VII-type can provide. You also carry more fuel so you can cover a greater area. + YOU GET TWO STERN TUBES !!!! :woot: you can shoot two at the pesky escort tracking you, while he turns away from the first torpedo the second will always hit !! |
For me it's the VII-series because of the handling and it's ability to escape escorts!

I'd go with the IXC ... further range, more eels, deeper diving.

VIIC
I vote for VIIC because it just "feels" better, despite less torpedoes and diving depth. So far in my various careers a depth of 220 I sufficient and VIIC provides for this...
An i like the way it looks, dives and provides for a smaller target Thats just me though:arrgh!: |
I've never had the IX, I can reach far flung places using the cows. I do generally run out of ammunition though so maybe I should be looking at getting a new boot. :hmmm:

I like to use the VIIC most of the time, especially for a quick attack on a convoy or task group or the occasional harbor raid. Though, to be honest, I always try to get transferred to a type IX around late '41 so I can partake in Paukenschlag. Shelling Whaling ships and tankers in the Caribbean is always a blast (no pun intended)
|
I would say VIIC it's faster, dives faster and so on....
But around 1941 im doing like f4wildweasel and changes to IX  |
The gap is closing.
Hope BDU can get enough IXs built to go around. |
I´ve had most interesting patrols "escorting" northbound convoys from Freetown in a IX. Two weeks of daily attacks :D
|
They both have advantages the VIIC is more maneuverable and dives faster but has relatively weak armour, the IXC is stronger and has a larger load-out but suffers from its large size and k believe it has a longer range
In WWII the IX U-Boat was strongly disliked by their crews they called it a Pig most Captains kept their VIIC boats |
Type IXC
Just finished my seventh patrol on Dec 22nd1940 and thought id upgrade to a IXC from my old type IXB, U-111. Got U-66 which has a nice paint job, two spare torps have been movedforward and the crew get a guard rail along either side. Lovely. I have lost my 37mm heavy flak and I've only got one 20mm position. Which I had to upgrade to a zwilling... The Caribbean better be full of Large Tankers. :D
|
I always use a Type II, but have used a Type VII on occasion. I've never even been a Type IX so I'll have to say; VIIC.
|
I always liked the look of they type 7, but I usually upgrade to the type 9 when available, because I like having more torpedos, and tubes to fire them with...
